Pines to Palms Presents: Hog hunt with a Henry .22 LR

A trad hunting video made and narrated in the same style as something you will find in Cabelas' safari adventures library. Can a humble .22 Long Rifle out of a Henry lever action take down a large boar with a well placed hit? You certainly bet it will. From 1851 to as late as the early 1900s, the Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver in .36 caliber had been the primary choice for varmint control on the farm and free-range slaughtering of feral hogs and cattle for direct shipment to the icehouses without having to go through the abattoir, and the old .36 cap and ball consistently delivered one shot kills with good shot placement. Current day big-bore magnum meatheads would scoff at this old warhorse, but in the accounts of gunfighters like Wild Bill Hickok and firearms historians like Elmer Keith, there is a reason why there are more than a million M1851 pistols produced, not just in the United States, but in the UK, Ottoman Empire, and Qing China as well, long after cartridge arms had been widely available, and is the preferred sidearm of hunters and soldiers everywhere. The Pietta brass framed reproduction of a .44 caliber "Navy", often erroneously named the "Confederate Navy Revolver", may be a historical inaccuracy in the western hemisphere because no Confederate .44 caliber "Navy" frames were really made, but in the late Qing Dynasty, a .44 caliber steel framed 'Navy' variant, produced by the Hanyang arsenal, had been the preferred carry gun of Li Hongzhang, one of the most respected and decorated officials in the Qing state, having risen through the Imperial armed forces to the rank of Admiral during the Taiping and Turkestan rebellions, to then being appointed to Protectorate Governor of Korea during the start of Japanese military aggression in the East China Sea in 1876. He continued to carry the .44 caliber cap and ball until the C-96 Mauser semiautomatic became available, carrying both guns right up until his death at the end of the First Sino-Japanese War in 1902.

The invention of modern smokeless powder breathed new life into the .22 LR cartridge, which by the 1880s had been almost entirely relegated to just the target and plinking sphere due to the limitations of black powder in such a tiny case. Today, the .22 rimfire is available in almost every conceivable variation, from primer driven CB caps for rodent control and tin can slaughtering, to magnum loads that had earned their place in defensive concealed carry circles.

Pines to Palms display an almost Zen-like concentration as he takes aim and delivers an instant and ethical shot to take down a large invasive boar in South Florida with a humble .22 LR lever action rifle. His stance is very similar to the stance of a Korean Gungdo endurance archer sitting under a shed in heavy rain and snow, keeping a powerful reflex bow continuously drawn while tuning out everything around him, every distraction, every discomfort, every nibbling of frost and icy wind, as he only focuses on the distant target. The martial art of Gungdo had been designed to 'train a warrior using the route of peace, so that he will always be clear minded and know what he is fighting for, even in the chaos of battle'. It is the art of precision shooting and is considered the most lethal martial art ever to exist.

If taxation without consent is robbery, the United States government has never had, has not now, and is never likely to have, a single honest dollar in its treasury. If taxation without consent is not robbery, then any band of robbers have only to declare themselves a government, and all their robberies are legalized. Lysander Spooner
