This is why I want a Cayman so bad. Optimal drivetrain layout but all the really awesome bits from the 911 swap on also. And there’s finally an aftermarket, and lower-ish cost, option for ceramic brakes

Most challenging racing series I was into was spec Miata. There were some ridiculous drivers and its was all about momentum. When I first started I couldn’t believe the speed dome of those guys carried through a turn.

I’ve tossed the idea of a Miata or even an Exocet around but this isn’t going to be a race car or even a dedicated track car. I want something to scratch my sports car and Germanophile itch that I can drive to work on nice days and blast through the mountains

But man, this looks like a ton of fun as well

Just too much work lol

That’s the main reason I stopped “really” racing. Life pops up and just do t have as much time.

I stopped road racing because I got tired of spending all my time and all my money on it.
That and my hands got slower as I got older and thats not good in a car that's always trying to kill ya.

Same reasons I gave up the cycle racing. When reaction times went over 120, death got a lot closer.

Problem is the E30 M3's are regularly fetching 6 figures these days. That puts them solidly into "too valuable to drive" category. No need to feel guilty about beating on a Cayman.
They do sound great though, even though I've got a weird hangup about BMW's with anything less than 6 cylinders in a straight line.
First minute of this video has some beautiful ITB music.

Getting a regular E30 and swapping some M3 bits crossed my mind and is still a possibility. I’d need our next house to have a much bigger garage or a real shop to do that though

For sure, if a guy wants an old BMW to drive hard and modify he's way better off starting with a non M car.
And as good as the M3's M10 sounds with ITB's, the M20 sounds even better, so there's that. Not to mention the underhood bling factor.

I miss my old E30. If I knew then what I know now I never would have sold it. Great drivers cars.
