At first, I thought it looked like a "Russel's Viper:"

but the spots are smaller, more irregular and more in number than a Russel's, and 2) Russel's Vipers are native primarily to the Indian Subcontinent.
yeah, that's like the time I was sure I ran over a mongoose that was running across the road with a nut in it's mouth, but 1) it had a bushy tail and 2) mongooses are native to Africa and Asia, and this was New Jersey.

The mongoose was imported to Okinawa in the early 1900s to control venomous snakes. Apparently, the mongoose didn’t care for the taste and they are now considered a pest.

I worked in a fairly remote area and saw them quite often. One would pop up in the road and challenge your car to a fight.
