Looks like a snapping turtle. I give those dinosaurs mad respect. Every snapper I encounter gets a pass. The really big ones, who knows how many decades they have been around. Hissing and slow until you get to the front end. Really an impressive predatory beast with a terrible attitude.

Damn... That blood trail. Geez.

Hydrostatic shock plus massive overpressure. Magnum revolvers and centerfire rifle cartridges .243 and up will literally leave nothing left at a pie plate sized area around the impact at that range. There was a VERY graphic video that was first livestreamed on Facebook about 6 years back that showed a guy buying his own farm with a .308 rifle or 12 gauge shotgun sitting at his computer. He was already on a call with the local 911 dispatcher and livestreaming when he did it and the 911 calls were flooding in from viewers as well. Right after the shot, sheriff's deputies entered the man's house. There was absolutely nothing left of his head except a mass of shredded flesh that looked like it was pulled into a grinder. The ceiling and all four walls of the room was misted with red. The stream was still running and it showed the officers still going through the protocol of searching and clearing the whole house before gathering around, securing the rifle that the guy used and discuss the next steps to be done with the scene. An equally vicious video was one of a very drunk Eastern European guy who placed an M80 firecracker in his mouth and lit the fuse presumably as an inebriated stunt, but failed to toss that firecracker far away in time. The results were the exact same...

Their handles are their tail and the front of their shell. The last time I encountered one was on open ground. He'd never let me get behind him. He'd always turn and face me. Many people think turtle immediately means slow. That's not the case with the snapping turtle. I finally walked off and let him be. He won the day.

Old timers always said; when he locks onto something with those jaws, he won't let go until it thunders.
