I tried so hard to get people to make the noise for me. They usually thought I was joking, which I was. But I also would have them drive on a road test and tell me exactly what special noise the car was making.
I was a tech at Maserati, Alfa Romeo and BMW for quite a few years. It would amaze me how many vehicles would come in for a noise complaint where when I road tested it I would hear three other minor noises but not one like the concern. I always loved pulling cars with an ashtray full of change. That meant I would never be getting a noise complaint out of that customer. I had a Ghibli lease that was almost bought back for a rattle one time that we could never duplicate. We found the idiot owner was very tall and had the seats in such an awkward position he had to crank the rear view mirror so far to see out of it the mirror housing would rattle on it. We never duplicated it because the seating position was changed just to get it to the shop. Loved the GTS Quattroporte. Tons of power for a 5500lb car.

I hated people who would nitpick about really faint noises. Thankfully, I didn’t have many of those. The worst was a ‘00 E430 4matic(awesome car) that had a very faint noise from the hat shelf. He had his salesman ride with him and turned the radio off, climate control off, rolled all windows up, and made his daughters be as quiet as possible. Even with all this nonsense the salesman could barely hear the noise. I’m still not sure exactly what I did to fix it but he didn’t complain about it again

Yea, it's strange how techs can't hear some sounds we hear, like the clicking of a stupid plastic, designed to fail, blend door actuator sticking and clicking.

I guess when it's a $1,400 warranty job to replace a $12 part (which forced me to rip apart the entire cab/firewall damn near, because f-that noise), they become hearing impaired. Just discussing this sets me back in therapy. :)

A friend had a strange intermittent noise when he would make a turn. It was an older car, restored somewhat, in really nice shape. It bothered him for about a week until he removed the coffee can with a few rocks in it we had laid on its side in his trunk. Cured the problem.

Thank you,
MrSmith

Sort of the same thing. We had a guy at work buy a new car, an import, this was back around 1970ish. He bragged how good of mileage he was going to get. We all chipped in and would put a couple gallons in his car every week, he was beaming about how great the mileage was, rubbing it in to all of us.
After a few months we stopped adding the fuel, he freaked out, took it back to the dealer wanting to know why his mileage dropped off so bad. He had it back quite a few times. We finally told him after a few more months.
