Mountain bike for $500 ish

Keep in mind all that suspension reduces rider input.

Doesnt really matter if the objective is excercise but if you are touring/wanting to get somewhere the shocks suck up your energy.

I lock out my fronts 99 percent of the time.

For your points though, yes Mtn bike is a solution that allows what may not otherwise be possible.

Roger that. My goal isn't speed, but time/distance (be lying if I said I don't review average speed). The biggest loss of pedal power is fast starts and steep grades, but I'm not racing, so...

Agree with padom. I use padded shorts under regular shorts and disc brakes are da bomb.

The seats mentioned by Rthur are a bit harsh.
“They feel like sitting on the small end of a baseball bat with a doily for padding.”
A quote from my oldest brothers high school speech about said seats from circa 1992. Quite true still.

Your ischial tuberosities will ache in ways you didnt know were possible on a racing type seat.
Builds character.

I kind of have a fetish for what I consider "nice things".

Not really top of the line technology but I loves me a leather ball hammock and its got springs reminiscent of a Harley FL police seat to boot.

Shame it comes via "our oldest enemies"

I did a 12 mile trip a few weeks ago in my shorts and T shirt. My ass was destroyed for about a week.

Exactly. Did it for a few weeks, thought it was normal. Talked to my buddy who MB daily and he laughed and said get padded bike shorts..Heaven the next time I road with them on. Never again.

They make a Brooks saddle without the springs for those who dont want to overtly show their old man status......

The Brooks is a great seat. Needs a fair bit of time to break in for comfort.

Also, if your unit goes numb, just make sure your wife is there to help ya wake it up....... ?

My bike, set up for family outings, is like a frickin sport utility these days.

I carry kids shit but I think these adaptations make it perfectly useful in @ArmyJerry s case to head down to the local ammo store and come back with a few units of fire......

The side panels on this bag drop down and unleash some pretty sizeable saddle bags.

Supports you will need to keep your ammo cans from banging into your spinning wheel...

Area for spare magazines, comms to call for fire....

On a day family trip my bike mounts all that luggage.

It strains the capability of my "not supposed to be on a technical bike" kick stand.

Pinkbike should have plenty in the classifieds that aren't Walmart specials. Generally there are some pretty sweet deals.

Govvelo has some good deals for mil/leo/veterans and will set everything up for you (i.e. suspension and generic fit) before it arrives.

There's also Expertvoice and they have huge discounts on a few vendors but it's largely dependent on what your group gets.

Get the padded cycling shorts and keep them clean. If your ass chafs, blisters, etc, try some chamois cream.

A bell is good if you ride trails that have foot or even bike traffic that is slower than you. It can be a nice, polite warning that you're coming through. As for the cushy seat vs cushy shorts, I prefer the gear be attached to my bike. But, y'all are probably more into it than I.

Lots of peeps already certain OP suffers chronic "chapped ass".......

Looking to gain some leg strength and and stamina without breaking the bank or having to wear faggot leotards in some gym full of leotard wearing fucksticks.

Got my eye on this bike, have not rode a pedal bike since my Schwinn Continental 10 speed in the 70's

I haven't read the rest of this thread. I'm kinda scared to. But....

AJ, I have a Giant. Can't remember if it's a Talon. I could look when I get home. I bought it probably 15-16 years ago, maybe longer. I gave about $500 for it back then. It's been a great bike. If you get it, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The cream makes all the difference on long rides. Just don't be stingy with it.
It should feel like you're putting on wet shorts.

I was gonna say a wet diaper but that made me think about Maser and now I have that fucking image in my head.

I looked into this about a month ago. I just purchased https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/oz...21-speed-mountain-bike#?repChildCatid=4139736
about a month ago. The front brake is kinda shit. And im not a fan of the pedals either (i have no idea why). But for what it cost It fine for getting started IMO. I wanted a "nicer" bike but i wasnt sure my fat ass would stay with it. I have been pretty good about staying with it. Also i am really starting to like riding it often.

When I was looking for a bike for my son 18 years ago, I went to Academy, Walmart, and Dicks (before they were dicks), to look for a bike for him. I would ride them up and down the bike isle and test the brakes. Everybody thought I was crazy. If the brakes didn’t stop me in a reasonable amount of time, it went back on the rack. I found none that was acceptable to me at any of those places. I ended up going to a local bike shop and bought a quality bike, and yes, the brakes worked very well. I ended up buying my bike and my daughter’s bike from the same shop. Get a quality bike. Just like a car, or gun etc., you get what you pay for, and your life may depend on it.

Not sure if this is the actual bike seat I have or not - but it's the two cheek ass pad concept you should definitely look for. Each cheek pad moves independently a little and both sides are spring loaded, plus there is a little shock absorber in the seat post itself. Whenever I took long rides my best friend (my dick, not my dog) would fall asleep - ie get all tingly and not in a good way. I knew a guy that rode bikes long distance a lot who developed prostate cancer and I wondered if that was part of the cause. I figured if normal bike seats restrict the blood flow enough to make it fall asleep it wasn't a good thing. Switched to a two ass pad seat and won't even ride a bike without one anymore. Your ass will definitely thank you if you try one. You can even find gel packs for them, but I don't use em.

skinney jeans???

any foo that can pack 80 lbs and hit the stairs is going to break those skinny jeans at his calves, but your right on...
i had a friend that would train for pikes peke on the emergency stairs of the 10 story condos here
