Rifle Scopes Mounting using feeler gauges, any tips..?

Re: Mounting using feeler gauges, any tips..?

Yes... patience. The method works perfectly... just take your time.

One thing to be sure to watch for, is interference from your windage knob and side focus. Other than that, it is simple.

Ours still have assembly lube.

Just watch out for the scope coming down in the rings as you tighten them down.

Treat it like head bolts--not very tight at first, go in a figure-8 pattern...and slide your feeler gauges at every step. Thin the stack as needed.

Don't be afraid to have some firm resistance--just so long as you can remove them you're good.

Also remember that the method works only if your base is square/perpendicular to the line leading to the centerline of your bore. M1A type mounts are often canted a bit because of how they seat into the receiver grooves, so for those there is no substitute for the old-fashioned 100-yard zero followed by a group at something like 10 mils up elevation on a plumblined target.

I even recommend that as a final check. If it's off, just rotate your scope so the reticle's vertical element tracks the line of what was actually shot.

Re: Mounting using feeler gauges, any tips..?

I used a feelergauge to level my scope, but didn't stack them. I just made sure it was flat on the rail, and flat on the scope bottom, and just very lightly twisted it. Dont bend it, just enough twist to be sure theres no daylight between the surfaces, Worked great for me.

Okay guys, gonna give her a try tonight, and hopefully at range tomorrow. Figure I will check it with a plumb, while level in my vise, this should give a solid indication.

This method worked very well for me, someone else on here suggested using playing cards which also sounds like a good option.

Okay, now I'm gonna have a chance to range report this weekend. Only thing is, I haven't verified the glass to be truly centered. I have a Tipton vise, so should I use plumb method? when I mounted the glass, I pretty much got her level, one on pic rail and other on brake, then used guages and mounted the PR.

Just want to be as dead nuts on as I can when I go for a zero.

/J.

Re: Mounting using feeler gauges, any tips..?

I also have a tipton gun vise, after mounting my s&b using the feeler guage method I checked it on a plumb line and everything looked good. Just to make sure I had everything perfectly level I put it in the vise first making sure it was level from front to back (it's important to do this so your bubble level isn't thrown off when your leveling side to side) after making sure it was perfectly level front to back I leveled it from side to side, then checked again to make sure it had stayed level in both directions and that the level on the feed rails was also level. I then moved my plumb line so it was parallel with my reticle and got behind the gun and checked it. I don't have nearly as much experience mounting scopes as many of the people on here but after I did all this I felt confident the scope was as level as I could get it. I used the wheeler levels
which are not very good but were ok for performing that additional check.

+1 I was going to say use some oil.

Re: Mounting using feeler gauges, any tips..?

Bumping an old post but I would add even if they get stuck just tighten everything down and then remove the scope from the rail. No need to pry them out.

Good idea, thanks.

Re: Mounting using feeler gauges, any tips..?

I was mounting a scope for a friend and the only set of feeler gauges he had were so screwed up that I used an allen wrench that just slipped between the scope and base and rotated the edges of the wrench up to the bottom of the scope and top of the base, which put the scope level with the base. I found it easier at the time.

Re: Mounting using feeler gauges, any tips..?

I bought a feeler gauge because I'm going to be installing a new scope. On a whim I checked two of my older scopes, which I leveled through hours of toying with bubble levels and also range use and plumb bob. Well, the feeler gauge told me they are perfectly straight, and that took 5 seconds.

Definitely will be using feeler gauge to set up new scope to save myself a ton of time.

Same here. I did my first feeler gauge scope leveling two days ago. Painless.

Re: Mounting using feeler gauges, any tips..?

I found that when mounting large diameter scopes, an adjustable parallel works perfect. This does the same thing without figuring out which 36 gauges to put together to get the correct thickness.
