Can someone give a quick break down on determining you MPH gun. I heard it on the pod cast awhile back but now using the search feature is not turning up any viable results.

Thank you!

Yes. Figure out at what MPH a 3 o’clock wind equals 1/100 of your range in mils.
So if a 5mph wind shows you .5 mils for a 500yard target, you have a 5mph gun.
My gun seems to be very very close out to about 900m or transonic With 6mph. After that in need to add about .1 mil.

First number of the G1 BC of your bullet
8 works well with heavy bullets in my 7 saum and 6 works well with light 7mm bullets and for my 260.
8 mph gun.
8 mph full value wind is a tenth every 100 yards out to 900ish
16 mph is double and 4 mph is half.

so my 308 is 0.475. That means in theory I have almost a 5MPH and I just need to verify that in the wind? Meaning at 500 yards in 5mph cross wind I would be just over a .6mil on hold over?

Probably just 4mph.
Do you have a ballistics calculator?

You have already seen @lowlight suggestion to look at the Everyday Sniper Podcasts, but here is a similar thread from last summer. Same material and authors, so worth reading:

I’ve gotten to where I don’t even look at the g1 BC.

True data at distance. Then plug in 4,5,6,7 mph full value wind. Look at the chart and pick the one I want to use.

Basically:

223/308 = 4/5 mph

6mm/6.5 = 6mph (slow rounds might be 5)

Fast 6’s or very high BC = 7 mph

Yes. Ballistic AE
Cool, so plug in a full value wind, and see at what MPH wind equates to 1/100 of your distance for your wind hold. If you’re shooting 308, it’s likely gonna be 4. MAYBE 5 if you’re really pushing your velocity.

It’s a Tikka so Doubtful I’m pushing any limits on velocity!
Again thanks to all for the help

Shot out to 984 yards (900 meters) on Saturday, wind at about 11 mph almost full value. I’d setup Strelok Pro using Jacks information, gave me about a 5mpg gun. It worked, I’m not good at judging the wind and this was my first time past 600 yards with my Tic Tac, it worked well.
shooting at a 2ft sq target on a 4ft board. 17 hits on the target and the other 3 still hit the board. Sadly no photos.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed on here (not forgetting lowlight).

John

This is the StrelokPro table I used to determine the 5mph.

Yes. Just use meters Instead. I would use 500 meters to match 0.5 mil rather than 600 =0.6 to find your gun mph. It absolutely works in meter too
Awesome,I should of said I’m still using moa all I have on my hunting rifles. But if it’s the same for mils moa should work too. Thank you Jack the work that you’ve done for this, wind rose and gravity Ballistics is awesome.
