Gunsmithing Muzzle break install question

I purchased 2 AAC 7.62 51T muzzle breaks. One threads on easily and shoulders against the barrel. The second one goes on about halfway down the threads on the same barrel before it gets tough to turn. I stopped before applying any pressure for fear of damaging the threads. I don't have the second rifle threaded yet so I don't have another rifle to try it on.

My gut feel is that a threaded muzzle break shouldn't be difficult to spin until it comes in contact with the shoulder on the barrel. Is that correct? Should I send this break back to AAC?

Re: Muzzle break install question

On a guess, it sounds like they went a squeak tight on the pitch diameter. Or there's some taper. Or the threads on your barrel were fitted to the part and are slightly off on the PD.

Sending it back is certainly an option, or just buy the appropriate tap and chase the threads on the brake. Use OIL.

Good luck.

Your best option is to send it back. If you damage it or booger it up trying to tap it yourself you may or may not get a replacement from AAC. I can definitely understand wanting to mess with it but if I just paid that kind of money for a brake and there was something wrong I wouldn't be spending 20 dollars more to get a tap Ill never use again to fix it.
