Just heard the bad news that my former co-worker died last weekend after nearly two years of pain and suffering.

It all began when he was working on his car. Trying to repair the coolant pump, the rusted nut undid suddenly and caused a complex fracture in his upper arm. Directly send to the hospital he had a surgery to stabilize the fracture.

With the external fixation in place, the bone did not heal for quite a long time, after postponing several surgeries to remove the fixation, a piece of his hip was inserted into the upper arm to fill the gap in his bone destroyed by the fracture.

A pathological test to check for bone cancer send to a swiss laboratory was negative.

However, after some days alot pus discharged through the fixation holes in his arm, nearly causing a fatal sepsis.

The 70mm piece from his hip was completely decomposed in his arm...

After cleaning his arm inside out, the only option was to amputate the arm at the shoulder joint. A local specialist for such extreme fractures said he can save the arm, but this was too bold a statement he made and the arm was cut off eventually.

This events took place in nearly 2 years!

Now, with a good chance to get well again, my co-worker and friend was relieved of the pain he had for a long time.

Still in hospital, another pathological test was made, this time the laboratory found out the whole arm had bone cancer in an advanced stage, even spread to the lungs...

With a daily chemo therapy in intensive care, the docs had hopes to get rid of the cancer.

But today I was informed that he passed away last weekend, aged 48, leaving a wife and two pre-teen daughters behind.

I had to write this tragic story down, maybe just for myself, to realize that a dear friend and good colleague passed away way to young.

He always had stories about his exessive life to tell that would crack up everyone listening and was the funniest guy with the best practical jokes I ever knew.

Thanks for your time reading this...

Stay safe y'all.

Sorry to hear that. You don't usually get to pick your time, sometimes you'll get an eye-opener like that. Condolences to you and the family of your friend.

Sorry for your loss! A friend of mine had something similar happen to him. He played drums and while playing his upper arm bone just snapped into. Turned out to be cancer in the bone but they caught his in time. Always remember the good times you had with him.

Surgeon Predator, I am truly sorry for your loss and for his family. "Pathological fractures", meaning fractures that shouldn't have occurred with the given "minor" trauma, and often mean look for a malignancy. He should have had a bone scan early, as the rate of sampling error in smaller biopsies is high (a small biopsy doesn't always show the bad stuff). This may not be much consolation, but if it was osteosarcoma or true "bone cancer" as opposed to a different type of cancer that spread to bone, the prognosis and outcome would have likely been the same even if diagnosed with the first trauma, as even "early"-treated osteosarcoma in adults still doesn't do well.

It sounds like you had some good memories with him- treasure those. God Bless.

Pour your glass, and pour one to the ground for your friend. Cancer is truly an evil we may never understand. I and my family give you and your friend's family our deepest condolences. The memories of all the good things will be thought of quite a lot, and at times, you will miss your friend but it is all the way things are. Enjoy the good things

Re: My co-worker and good friend passed away....

Thank you all for the kind words, most appreciated.

Sadly, I could not make it to the funeral today, but I'll relay your condolences to the family.

Thanks again, guys!

Re: My co-worker and good friend passed away....

Some similarity to my father.

Back in August or early September of last year he lifted a lawn mower and thought he had pulled a muscle in his back...badly. He didn't go to the doctor to see what had happened, just assumed that he would heal up. Six weeks go by without much sleep or anything resembling rest. He looked horrible. He finally went into the hospital and, to make the story short, found out that he had broken his back and had been walking around with broken vertebra pressing into his spinal cord. While in the hospital, he lost the use of his legs. One thing led to another and we found out that he had bone cancer throughout most of his body as well as cancer in his liver and prostate. He died in early December.

I feel for your loss and for his family's loss.

Re: My co-worker and good friend passed away....

My partner coughed and broke a rib while we were on a training exercise. That was in December and we buried him in July.
Lost my Dad to cancer too.
Very, very sorry for your loss.

Re: My co-worker and good friend passed away....

Hard to lose a friend. I am 48 and starting to lose some good guys that I have known for years. Some of the gents that took me under their wings about 25 years ago when I started shooting right after I got out of the Navy, are in decline. They were about 20 years older than me and have not kept a watch on their health. I am going to miss those old mentors.

God bless you and all that knew and loved your friend.
