Hi all, I've come across this photo of my grandfather, undated.
He is on muster roll for May 15th, 1942. I know he was on Guadalcanal from all the stories from childhood and growing up, still trying to find out more detailed information for that time period (who/where/when)... I also recently discovered that he was on board the USS Ornsby at the beginning of July, 1944, as a part of the newly reformed First Provisional Marine Brigade. They sailed from Eniwetok to Guam, where they disembarked on the 21st of July to participate in the initial landings at Agat for the Second Battle of Guam. He was evacuated to the USS Pinkney at some point between July 22-31, after having sustained an injury to his face and head from a Japanese hand grenade, for which he was awarded the purple heart. His last muster roll I can find is January, 1945, in San Diego, perhaps Naval Hospital? His rank for the entirety of his service was Pfc. I always knew about the injury/Purple Heart, but I had never known when/where exactly he got it. He was my hero, he raised me, and was my ultimate father figure. Unfortunately, I lost him in the Spring of 2010.
Any help identifying the "accoutrements" on his uniform, or anything you can tell me about the photo would be supremely helpful! Thank you!
