Hi all, I've come across this photo of my grandfather, undated.

He is on muster roll for May 15th, 1942. I know he was on Guadalcanal from all the stories from childhood and growing up, still trying to find out more detailed information for that time period (who/where/when)... I also recently discovered that he was on board the USS Ornsby at the beginning of July, 1944, as a part of the newly reformed First Provisional Marine Brigade. They sailed from Eniwetok to Guam, where they disembarked on the 21st of July to participate in the initial landings at Agat for the Second Battle of Guam. He was evacuated to the USS Pinkney at some point between July 22-31, after having sustained an injury to his face and head from a Japanese hand grenade, for which he was awarded the purple heart. His last muster roll I can find is January, 1945, in San Diego, perhaps Naval Hospital? His rank for the entirety of his service was Pfc. I always knew about the injury/Purple Heart, but I had never known when/where exactly he got it. He was my hero, he raised me, and was my ultimate father figure. Unfortunately, I lost him in the Spring of 2010.

Any help identifying the "accoutrements" on his uniform, or anything you can tell me about the photo would be supremely helpful! Thank you!

stripes indicate he was a corporal in that picture. not a pfc. cross is rifle marksmanship badge...sharpshooter i beleive but not sure that long ago. the other badge is generally where the pistol marksmanship badge goes but not sure about it. looks strange to me.

Thank you both. All of the 3 muster rolls say Pfc (including 1944 for Guam), and the first one I can find is May 15, 1942. When I was a kid, he only spoke about being a Pfc during combat. He dropped out of high school to join, and didn't get his High School diploma until he was in his early 70's or thereabouts.

Maybe that was his last promotion before he got out, and wasn't able to really serve as such?

That's what I'm thinking. This man pretty much raised me, and he never ONCE mentioned being anything other than Pfc.

I have the original print at home. I will see tonight if I can get a more detailed close up of the ribbons/quals.

He also rates a combat action ribbon which was made retro-active for WWII veterans and a sea service deployment ribbon which was also made retro-active for WWII veterans.

Thank you sirs,

I am working on getting the full records from the USMC archive in Missouri. I am not the next of kin still living, and my father and I don't speak to one another.

That expert pistol badge qualitification may have the additional qualifications years. I seem to recall that way back when, a Marine just added bars for each expert qualitifcation (versus now, when you swap out X year for X year).

If that holds true, then your grandfather qualified Sharpshooter the year of this photo, and had qualified four times as a expert with the pistol.

Cool stuff; I just went through the same thing with my grandfather's military history (Merrill's Marauders-5307th Composite Unit, 1stBn, Company Bravo/Red team after reorg). You can petition the National Archives for his records if you are the nearest direct descendant (I did the paper work, but had my mother sign off as the oldest direct descendant). It takes months, but one day...poof...it shows up in the mail.

Oh, and looking at the photo a second time, that is definitely a Corporal's uniform, not just corporal stripes hastily sewn on the jacket (you can just make out the blood stripes on the trousers). Perhaps he was busted, (that was not a big deal back then; in fact, it was fairly common), or perhaps a promotion after coming back and waiting to muster out?

So this is the limit of my ability to capture detail in the original print. The first badge is Rifle, pmclaine was right on, the third is the BAR, but I am at a loss on the middle...
