I just noticed on the forum stats that the membership here is now 74,702 members.
As I remember, when I joined the count was in the low thousands. Maybe just in the high hundreds.
At that time, the topics were a lot more shooting related, and almost no one posted about their trucks, or girlfriends.
Now it has almost a Facebook quality.
Frank, I want to thank you from the bottom of my little thumping gizzard for this site. It has been a source of good information and laughs for me. I don't know why you did it, or why you still do it, but many thanks for doing it.
I hope you keep it up for many years more.

David

Re: My, how we have grown

It was Frank's original idea to make this a midget porn site. He just had trouble performing in front of a camera. He had to fall back on the other exceptional skill he possesses.

way too many posts
When I found this site I was looking for a long range rifle to compete with. It all started with that little PSS, and snowballed from there. I have made some great aquaintences, and a very good friend. I can say one thing though. The site was better off with only a few basic sub forums and the lower membership numbers that had thick skins. Nowadays, far too many pussies with guns

My doctor says that's from all the estrogen being pissed into the water supply. Bunch of metrosexuals drinking tap water.

Got here early in 04, # 3026 Different environment for sure. Most of the regular contributors of the time have long since left. Bullcrap tolerance was much lower at the time.

I read a bunch and post very little.

Anybody remember reading the Minute of Duck thread?

It's great when trolls report trolls for trolling them. The irony is thick with this one.

Re: My, how we have grown

I lurked for almost three years before even signing up, I just loved to read all the information people were putting out. However, my bank account really wishes I had never seen this site.

Minute Of Duck, yeah, I remember that. Things were definitely different 'way back when' and I remember opening up a thread about that line of thought. About this being a "place to learn".

Some agreed with me, whilst many ridiculed me. There were a few who said to 'grow a thicker skin'. (not sure if we were on the same topic or not, but anyways)

Point is, like society, this is what we are reaping. Much apropos for all the sowing that has been done. Here we are.

Question is, where are we going? I respect the 'active only' section, if only to presume that it'll be a "no-nonsense" area continuing on the intent of the site.

And the rest of us? We'll keep shopping, touting the wares, and arguing about whether Multicam is or isn't better than Tiger Stripes.

(there's some sarcasm hidden amongst the comments, see if you can pick it out)

Now, back to the duck sitting on the water-tank.....

Oh yeah, fwiw:

Definitely NOT a plankowner, but have been around for a little while. I am one of the First 9(thousand)

HA!

Re: My, how we have grown

I've been here from near inception I believe.

See a lot of crazy schit.

Still a great site and Frank definitely has resolve after some of the things that have happened over the years. I'm thinking this site has given back many times what he's put in. Kudo's to him for holding steadfast and making this site great.

Re: My, how we have grown

I am glad that Frank is doing well: He deserves it after all those years of putting his own money into the Site just to keep it going. I do miss the low tolerance for BS and the lack of commercialism, though.

Today there are so many new people, with no knowledge or experience, who are telling the members who've been there that they don't know what they're talking about. Guys who know aren't going to bother argue with people they have never met, they'll simply leave. That's how we lost FortyOne (and a few others), and the site is noticeably poorer without them.

I like Frank's idea of having the Site give its approval to some of the regulars who are known to give solid advice - maybe by making their name a different color. That way new new people could tell at a glance whether they are getting a bogus opinion or a valued one. That said, I see the various problems attached to doing that and I understand why it hasn't been tried yet.

I would love to hear some workable ideas on how to make this site better while at the same time keeping it well-grounded in serious tactical marksmanship. I, too, am getting tired of Threads about intenet hoaxes and conspiracies, 'shtf' scenarios, building an 'accurate' 'Navy SEAL rifle' and various other assorted inanities.

Happen to have a link? I was just thinking this morning that I wasn't sure which route I would take to work when SHTF

All kidding aside, things were different even just a few years ago when I signed up. My first 200 posts came very slowly because I was afraid of looking like an idiot in front of some of the very knowledgeable posters. I learned a lot more then too. Now many of those posters have been replaced with a different kind of poster...

Whatever happened to SuperBee950? His hide dots target still stands out to me as a testament of excellent marksmanship.

Re: My, how we have grown

41 was a true loss Graham, that type knowledge base and personality aren't common. There are several that have made us lesser in their absence. I actually enjoyed Nobody but the writing was on the wall on that one, just the lack of self confidence couldn't be overcome.

Now that is right on point!!!

DANG, Cocadori-- we're damn near related. Before I lost my login and simultaneously changed my email address, thereby locking myself out permanently from my original user login, I was:

You, Rob01, Greg, Michael, Sean, Terry and Frank are about the only ones left from the 'beginning'. What ever happened to Sasquatch, Mike D., and Capt. Huskey?

Re: My, how we have grown

Minute of duck was actually a for sale ad.

41... man I loved reading his words and chatting with him. Great guy for sure and I hope he is doing well.

As for the names above disappearing, well a couple couldn't stay out of the political arena, great guys though. Mike D took me to my first match and taught me a lot. He was one hell of a guy.

Re: My, how we have grown

Yeah I've been here a bit. More active at times than others.

There are a few that I do miss reading their typed letters.

There are some I wish would have "just played along" as they had much to contribute. But as was said their lack of self confidence ruined them. Still does.

I've met a bunch of fine individuals on here. In person even!

Re: My, how we have grown

I have no room to talk, as an occasional lurker through college, I did not sign up until a few years later I was earning enough money start shooting again.

However, I have noticed a lot more main-stream media topics appearing on all the boards I frequent from mcarterbrown and stockclasspaintball, to gunnit, m4carbine, and here.

It seems like mass media has focused on SHTF, bugging out, and modern warfare (bug-out leave the food, but grab all the ammo) type person.

I think its more the internet culture than here specifically, but it does tend to bring trolls, whiners, and more off topic chatter than actual forum specific content.

Re: My, how we have grown

Gorsh, Mickey...; did we ever get where we were headed?

Anybody remember The Lowlight Directive...?

Re: My, how we have grown

Hanging in this website since 04, lurk daily, seldom post. "It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubt of it" LOL

I spend too much time/money in this site.

TS. Wow that s name I haven't heard in a while! My first precision rifle (AI/AE) was purchased from TS. It was my first cross country purchase, I badly wanted the AI. After reading TS posts I was more comfortable dealing from him. Still have the rifle, good weapon

Easy solution for ya...
Just stick to the 'Armory & Supply' & 'Advanced Marksmanship Unit' forums and you'll be in great shape.
Like some of the other posts mentioned above, I lurked around before signing up.
Too much great information to pass up.
Great way to hear from shooters across the country & link up with shooters in my area.
I need to take some of the other GA members up on their offers to fire a few rounds, but work is tight right now.
I shoot occasionally with a couple of the guys i work with but they aren't very serious about it. As long as they can hit a deer at 150, their satistfied.
When I "hopefully" get a bonus at the end of the year, I plan on buying the online training.
AND... just to be fair, this site has MUCH MUCH less BS than most of the other shooting websites that i've trolled around, although some of the members here can be rather hauty at times because they shoot a GAP or some $10k custom.
Even with some of the BS (& I am a contributor, I know) this is a much better site than any other.

At this point in my rant, I must express much thanks to the administrators for this online community & it's wealth of knowledge.
Not to mention, some of the crazy postings do help to curbthe bedrudgery of the standard workday.

Re: My, how we have grown

I too miss 41 and his seemingly esoteric posts.

Someone asks a question about ghillies or SNIP3R!#* rifles and only he could get away with quoting some obscure poem and have it make a lick of sense. Or maybe he made no sense at all and let us search for sense in our little pea brains. Who knows. Screw Socrates, the 41 method damn well worked-- still trying to figure it out.

I'll be a better man if I can.

Re: My, how we have grown

I guess member # 483 means I've been here a while. I just don't type as much any more.

Re: My, how we have grown

Remember the Savage 260 rifles Frank and several other early members set up to shoot tactical on the cheap?
Ended up doing the Spirit of America match at Raton.
I competed that year.
Ghost Dancer?
or maybe
Ghost Whisperer?
Or something like that.
Around 2000 or 2001.
F-Class befre there were official NRA rules on the classification.

That was when I got involved with the website because I had been shooting a 260 for a few years in 3 position High Power already.

At least I had the opportunity to get in on the tail end of the "good ol' days".

I think Greg still has his.

Re: My, how we have grown

We need a place for "classics" threads like the MOD, and the kid telling Mr.Brown about Barrels and actions. So many good ones I cant remember them all.

The Ghost Dancer project was what brought me here through Google searches.
What a resource.
