So today I went to my local shop and picked up a 308 sps varmint. Just looking at the stock I can tell Im not going to like it but the trigger, action, and bbl look and feel great. I put my super sniper on it and went to shoot it.

The soybean field where I shoot is almost always wind, today it was around 90 degrees with 15-30 mph of constant wind.

I bore sighted it and got out some cheap pmc 147g ammo. Its crap but I use the brass and I just was using it to break in the barrel with.

The first 3 shots of cheapass ($12 abox) pmc were less than an inch apart at 150 yards.

I shot half the box cleaning inbetween shots to help break the barrel in.

Next I wanted to try my 175 smk handloads.
They grouped just less than 1 inch at 150 yards.

Next were my 168 smk handloads, I only shot 2 shots and they were about 3 inches apart. (I had 3 out but one didnt fire)

Next I wanted to try some cheap 150 american eagle. A 3 shot group of 16 dollar box of american eagle grouped at 1.2 inches at 150 yards.

I was to tired and hot to shoot anymore, and I was kinda pissed at my handloads (I had 2 that didnt fire), and the wind, so I left.

But all in all I really like the rifle, it shoots much better than my stevens. lol I eventually will change the stock but not for about a month or 2.

Ill get some pic up in a minute.

Heres the 2 shot 168 smk group, I dont know wtf happened here, wind gust, flinch, idk but I thought this rifle REALLY liked that load.

Heres the rifle. I had to buy some normal bases for it just so I could shoot today, but I did order an EGW 20 moa rail from midway.

My scope is a super sniper 16x42 btw.

My mom really loves seeing my rifles near her Easter decorations lol.

Re: My new 700 sps varmint

Nice rifle man. I have one just like it and love it!

Don't beat yourself up on your handloads. I thought I had mine down and they well all to hell this past weekend. Those are respectable groups in my opinion with a brand new rifle and that much wind. Good work. Mine seemed to "settle" in after a couple hundred down range.

What part of NC are ya in?

Re: My new 700 sps varmint

Id save your money and go with a Bell and Carlson, or save up a little more and get a Manners or McRee if you want a chasis that doesnt require bedding and comes ready to go out of the box with a mag system

Re: My new 700 sps varmint

B&C is a nice stock and lends itself better (my opinion) to our type of shooting. You'll find that your rifle will probably shoot just about what ever you feed it. Mine does.

Re: My new 700 sps varmint

I can't believe you went to the dark side (shakes his head)... JK I'm glad you're happy and starting to have a bit more fun shooting. Now start handloading so you can really reach the potential of that rifle.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: My new 700 sps varmint

Nice looking gun. Yea the stocks are POS's but so are the SPS tac and 700P stocks. But they do fair enough.

+1 for another 700 owner.

I have a SPS tac. as well. I got the BO 1 piece 20MOA base and BO M40A3 USMC rings and haven't looked back. Kinda $$ but well worth it.

Edit: Badger Ordnance. Sorry I forget not everyone knows what I mean by BO

I love my SS. It's only downside is the eye relief is very picky on it. Other than that I love it. The trunions are awesome and the mildots are exact so it makes adjustments on to target so easy it's not even funny.

Good luck,
Merritt

Lol, I know.

I noticed that mine was kinda picky on the eye relief aswell, but still very good for the price.

I have an SPS tactical in that stock and really like it a lot. and thinking about sending the whole rig to Skunkworks and have him do this sps tactical overhaul. I also have a SS 16x on an AR and like it enough that I ordered the HD model yesterday, that will be going on my SPS. I went with seekins base and rings, still waiting on those too.
by the way cpt. obvious, did you ever figure your mueller problem or was it the stevens?

Re: My new 700 sps varmint

Let me tell you, my SPS is a shooter! Still breakin in rifle (35 rounds to date) and last group came out to .61MOA @ 100 yards.

It is a 700 SPS .308 26" HB, and I mounted a Vortex 6.5-20X44 on top of an EGW picatinny 20MOA base with Warne rings:

Still getting used to rifle, need a cheek piece some kind of bad, as right now having to hold head up to get a good line of site. Those groups above were taking with Winchester 150 Power Point, $13 box from Wal Mart. I think once I get rifle broke in, put some good ammo down her, and get used to rifle itself (cheek piece, adjust trigger, etc...) this thing should be a tackdriver!
