I am new to the forum so want to start out by saying Hi to everyone.

This is the setup I am planning when I get home. Just wanted to see what yall thought of it.

Savage 10 FCP-K 308

Wonder optics Gen 4 4x14-50 Tactical 30mm tube

TPS XP Tactical 1 Piece base

I plan on using TPS Tactical Scope 30mm Rings but I'm not sure what height I should use (low, med, or high). Any help and comments are appreciated.

Re: My plans for new rifle

Love the 10fcp and have one myself. Not sure on the optics. went with a pst 4-16 which to me is the best bang for the buck. Jay from opticsspecialists is the man to hit up.

Re: My plans for new rifle

I am also looking at adding a bi pod. I ahve been looking at Harris bi pods but, also nc star bi pods. The Nc Star is alot cheaper is it really worth the extra for a Harris bi pod.

Re: My plans for new rifle

Or get a Weaver tactical 3-15x scope, well worth the money. I believe Low rings would be just fine, if you're unsure there wouldn't be anything wrong with getting medium rings either. You're looking at a great rifle with a lot of potential, a decent scope and bipod will ensure you get the most out of it, while I have a UTG bipod, and it has worked perfectly for me for two years, I suggest getting a Harris, better to ensure quality than to gamble on something else.

Re: My plans for new rifle

I was looking at the Falcons are they good. I'm looking for about the best tactical scope i can get for around $350. I do plan on later getting something better but it will be on down the road.

Re: My plans for new rifle

If its the same one I'm thinking it is. The Savage with the MCM A5 is out of my price range that is about what im looking to spend on the build in all right now lol. But, I do have a little while before i will even be home to be able to get everything I'm trying to get everything together and research and find the best prices for now i might start ordering some of the accessories so they will be ready when I get home.

Re: My plans for new rifle

The falcon menace is definitely a descent scope to start with and one of the best within your price range. Can I ask what this rifle is for? If its simply for target shooting, I think a fixed power scope would be better, something like the SWFA SS 10x fixed scope, which is also in your price range I believe.

Re: My plans for new rifle

It's going to be for target but I plan to hunt with it some also. The only thing about the Falcon is the adjustments are 1/10 mil and I'm not very familiar with how that would work. I have been shooting since I was young but I am just really getting into target shooting and still have alot to learn.

Re: My plans for new rifle

I seen in the sale part of the forum that has the Falcon 4-14X44FFP ML for $365. Thats $20 off what SWFA has them for and it's free shipping also. like I said though i dont really know much about the adjustments on it but, I am willing to give it a try. How much differnce is there from 1/10 mil and 1/8 or 1/4 adjustments?

Re: My plans for new rifle

The falcon menace is a mil/mil scope, what that means is that the reticle is in mils (mildot) and the adjustment turrets are in mils (.1 mils), so adjustments are easier since the reticle matches the turrets. For example, if you're dialing in your scope at 100 yards (this is assuming that you're scope is ffp or on the right zoom in an sfp scope), you aim at the center of the target and the bullet hits half a mil down and 3/5ths of a mil to the right, then you simply make the adjustments with the turrets (5 clicks up, 6 clicks to the left) and you should be on target.

Hope that clears things up as to why you want the .1 mil clicks on a scope with a reticle in mils, now as to the falcon, I believe the one you are referring to is the one with the ML16 reticle, which some people consider to be difficult to work with sometimes (since it is simply a bunch of lines instead of actual dots). I suggest actually spending the extra 20 dollars and getting the one with the EMD reticle from SWFA, easier to work with imo and, from what I've seen, has better ratings as well.

Re: My plans for new rifle

Thank you your first post cleared it up quite a bit for I posted it before I seen your post. Yeah I can spend the extra $20 and get the other one.

Re: My plans for new rifle

As rusty explained, mil/mil ffp scopes are the easiest to learn with and I feel that overall they are better scopes. Rusty mentioned breaking mils into fractions, if that works for you then great. But since you are dipping your toes in the water, it makes it even easier to train your brain for mils in decimals. For example, .5 mils = 5 clicks on the turret, 1.8 mils = 18 clicks on the turret, and so on.
Welcome to the Hide by the way.

Re: My plans for new rifle

Thank you I just joined and am already learning alot. I can tell I'm going to be on here a bit trying to learn everything I can lol. That does help with the decimal also.

Re: My plans for new rifle

Hey if your in the market for a bipod, an option for you might be the blackhawk bipod that just came out. I don't have one or know anyone who does, but I did see someone asking about them here on the hide. They look to be a competitor to the harris line but they cost less. It might be what your looking for. Welcome to the hide.

Re: My plans for new rifle

I have a falcon menace 5-25x50, I'm pretty happy with it for the price. I think you will be happy with the 4-14 as a starter. I would sugest you look at the savage 10 series rifles in different stocks. I personally like the savage 10fcp hs precision.

Re: My plans for new rifle

That is a little bit more than I plan to spend at the moment. I have however, been thinking about changing the stock later down the road or, is that not a good idea. I'm trying to keep it around $1200 for everything right now. I am open to suggestion though so what do you think would be better? I thought the accustock was supposed to be pretty good.

Re: My plans for new rifle

The accustock seems to be an accurate choice. I just dont find it visually or ergonomicaly appealing. And since theres not a huge market for used high end savage stocks, at least not yet. You'll most likely have to pay retail for a replacement. So if you like the hs or macmillan stocked version I'd get one of those to start with. Or get the non accustock gun and save yourself some money until you can afford the stock you really want. That way your not having to buy anything twice.

Re: My plans for new rifle

The accustock definitely makes the rifle accurate, but it definitely isn't a looker and isn't as good as some aftermarket options. I agree with the above poster, get one that already comes with an H-S or Mcmillan or get a cheaper, non-accustock model and build from there, imo its not worth paying retail for an accustock, especially since it can go up to 800 dollars for that rifle, you can probably find a non-accustock model for 500-600 if you look hard enough.

Re: My plans for new rifle

Not to blow the savage out of the water, but you might want to consider a Tikka T3.
I got mine about 4 years ago and it is a great shooter. I paid about $500 for mine, I think they are up around 600 now. Really the only downside is the light barrel. Groups like this are pretty common:

The last two shots in the first pic were shots 29 and 30, so my barrel was pretty warm. Well worth the money and aftermarket parts are becoming more common.

Re: My plans for new rifle

I was looking at the Tikka t3 Scout CTR. But, I didn't know weather the 20" barrel would be a good choice for long range. I still have not excluded it though. I'm still exploring my options. I just really think the Savage would be the best bang for my buck. But, the Tikka does guarantee 1 moa with any factory ammo.

Re: My plans for new rifle

I have been reading some of the long range forums and read an article. It had some good info. It had a part about ammo and I did a google search for some of it and found a site that has the 308 / 155gr Scenar Lapua rounds for pretty good price. I think they're hand loads though you think that is a good deal or should I get the factory loaded ammo. Just a thought here is the link if you would like to check it out.

Re: My plans for new rifle

I have found the Tikka t3 scout ctr for about the same price it's a little more but not much. But, it has a 20" barrel I need at least a 24" for long range shouldn't I.
