So I have narrowed down my choices for my first rifle build and was looking for some input.

Savage:
Savage 10 Precision Carbine 308
Savage 10 FCP 308

Remington:
Remington 700 sps varmint
Remington 700 sps Tactical.

Any thoughts, experiences and opinions welcome..

Re: narrowed down, now needing input

What are you wanting this for?
Target
Hunting
Tactical
"Hey, look what I got!"

For the first 3, and I knew that I was never going to upgrade (EVER), get a savage. Both triggers are not great, but stock to stock, I like the accutrigger.

If I EVER planned on doing ANYTHING to it (although there is aftermarket support for the savage), I would buy the SPS tactical.

+1 what ogreshooter said. I really like my Savage 10PC in .308. The full length aluminum barrel channel is nice in the Accu-Stock. It shoots lights out. I still prefer Remington triggers. It just took a little to get use to the Accu-Trigger. You'll probably find more after market stuff for the Remington in a build.

I'm not sure if it will have any bearing on your plans for shooting, but I think both of the savages are rifled 1:10" and the remingtons are 1:12". May plan a role in your decision if you ever plan to shoot heavy subsonic loads at some point.

Re: narrowed down, now needing input

I would go for the Remington SPS Varmint. It is basically the same rifle as their Police model but with a different stock. I know its the same barrel. It would be very easy (and cheap) for you to buy the SPS and pick up a used HS Precision Police stock on the hide. THat would give you a very nice rifle. I made the mistake of flat out buying a 700 Police in 300winmag for almost $900. If you go the route I just mentioned you can save some coin and put that towards optics. My 700 Police is a tack driver.

Re: narrowed down, now needing input

I would avoid the 10PC only because its the latest example of Savage screwing around with a good thing, changing specs (bottom bolt release) for no good reason and alienating the aftermarket in the process.

Your choice depends on the direction you want to go with the build...if you want to use an AI chassis, go Rem because they don't make one for Savage. If you want a wide selection of mid-range aftermarket stocks, choose Rem because there are many more options than Savage. If you like DIY projects and don't want to spend hundreds in gunsmithing fees, choose Savage.

Personally, I'd choose "none of the above" and go with the 10FP-SR because it has the standard RH side bolt release and a factory threaded barrel.

Re: narrowed down, now needing input

i just bought a 700 varmit.

stock leaves ALOT to be desired
trigger is just "OK" when you adjust and polish it.
i shot a box of 20 FGMM in a 1" hole at 100yrds so deff shoots 1moa or better.
i also shot 20 rounds of handload i have from my sako .308 and it shot .6 moa
so for the base price i think you can not go wrong with the varmit.
it also takes ALOT of rapid shots to heat up the barrel, and when hot "ish" it seems to hold grouping rather well.
over all i am very impressed with my 700 sps varmit out of the box
