NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

Re: NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

Seems a far way for you to travel to do some shooting. My sister used to live in Guymon. lots of miles out there. Poor ground water unless you go deep. Hotter n hell and cold enough to freeze a still forming thought.

Other than that its a great place!

Re: NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

Wasn't thinking of travelling, was thinking of relocating!!

Water is the key though, what do you mean poor ground water, bad quality? Hard to get?

I'd prefer the black hills but my g/f and I are compromising...

It's either that or SE Oklahoma, found 20 acres relatively cheap down there but it's all forested and there are neighbors..

Re: NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

Ive lived in both the panhandle area and SE Oklahoma. Id choose SE OK just for its proximity to other stuff. That being said be careful where you choose in SE OK.... Theres places there I wouldn't want to venture to far off the paved roads.

The panhandle has nothing going on unless you farm and the closest real town is Amarillo.......

Re: NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

They call it "no man's land" there for a reason. You should do an extened visit. There are good people and pretty serious shooters in the Woodward area, but shooting in the wind is part of everyday life. Every day at least 10 mph. Couple times a week well over 25 mph. Evey week all year long. Only time the wind isn't blowing it's around 110 degrees. After a couple of years you get used to being a foreigner and the place grows on you. PM me if you are really serious and I'll help with specifics if I can.

rrflyer - "Theres places there I wouldn't want to venture to far off the paved roads."

Can you be more specific? I was planning to make a motorcycle trip to S.E. OK this summer.

Re: NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

Xshot, you will be fine. Not all of S. E. Oklahoma is bad. People take motorcycle trips in that area all the time. It has some pretty countryside.

ArticLight, what town are you looking at in S. E. Oklahoma? You do need to be careful moving there. There are a lot of good people, but, there are those that don't like outsiders much.

Re: NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

The riding is great! My mom and step dad make a couple of trips a year up there.

But if I were going to be relocating permanently I would do my homework on the different areas.

Re: NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

South East is a lot better than western. Theres just nothing out there unless you want to farm. If you want to get an affordable place to shoot then you could look at Stillwater, Ponca City, Seminole, or down in Mcallister. All of these towns have all the normal things to do but they are more rural towns. If you are only looking at 20 acres then it will be more difficult to find a good safe place to shoot that wont upset all the nieghbors. Most people that do that sort of thing have 125+ acres around here.

If I could get 150 acres for a reasonable price, put a small house on it, solar power or wind power it for the most part I'd be in hog heavan.

Kind of tired of having neighbors, I don't go out much either but internet access would be important (Probably satellite).

SE Oklahoma - not for me...too crowded. I want a small town at most, but Custer Sotuh Dakota was my original retirement idea...I love the Black Hills, rapid City just 45 mins away..

Re: NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

That is a nice area, I have ridden my mules in and around Black Mesa and Kenton a number of times.

The reference to bad water I think, refers to high concentrations of gypsum in some locations or perhaps just the fact that the water in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles can be very hard.

You might look at and consider the eastern most counties in the Texas Panhandle, from Lipscomb down to Collingsworth. Generally there is more water, more trees and these counties are mainly rural areas with farming and ranching the main activities. Unlike Oklahoma, Texas has no State Income Tax and most rural properties are taxed as agricultural. In addition this state is gun and shooting friendly.

Since when is Oklahoma not gun and shooting friendly?

The Brady Group lists Oklahoma as tied for the worst state in regard to gun laws. When you add in the legislation that was just passed that allows business owners/employees to defend themselves in parking lots of the business, Oklahoma may move to last all by itself. To suggest that any state is more gun friendly than Oklahoma is ridiculous.

...red mule, not saying you are dissing Oklahoma, just posting to clarify that Oklahoma supports the 2nd amendment.

Re: NE1 Live in the Oklahoma Panhandle?

AL, I've lived in Oklahoma all my life. I've hunted deer and coyotes over the entire state. Western Oklahoma is a fine place to live. There will be a large town within reasonable driving distance just about anywhere you go. If you want more info or have any specific questions, PM me and I'll send you my phone number. I'll help you any way I can.
