The forensics of that battle are unbelievable in the details learned.

Most of the tankers in the Panther lived through the duel.

The commander bailing out of the Sherman died. Got to imagine the fame of that clip brings his survivors sorrow every time they see it.

The woman from the sedan lived having her car shot up and was treated by American medics but while lying in the street waiting for evac she was run over by a tank.

Scary shit how close they got.

Thing about films that doesnt come through is the noise.

The "sharpness" of big gun fire has to be experienced right there to really understand it.
 
Sherman takers had big brass ones. Minimal armor and underpowered main gun.

Reliability, numbers, crews able to think/act on the fly came through though.

Those tanks were not the piece of shit "the history" would have you believe.

Its like the M16 - there were guys in Vietnam that loved it. There are even guys now that say people shot with one actually die. Its not hanging on over 50 years because it sucks.

Not saying they were shit. Just outmatched by German armor. Sherman's were more reliable, but were outgunned and had less protection for the crew. 75mm main gun vs. 88 mm.

This battle is one of the first engagements of the new US Tank, the M26 Pershing. That tank would equalize and maybe put us in front of the Germans. Too bad we didn't have it earlier in the war...

Interesting one of the survivors from the Panther thought the Pershing was a German tank and accused the Americans of some sort of Skorzeny ruse.

I believe that was do to the fact that a Pershing looks nothing like a Sherman. That big ol muzzle brake on the main gun was similar to the German 88.

I could see the Pershing being mistook for a Panther based on that photo above.....

Tracks are way off though.

Germans thought return rollers were for women or small tanks, not heavies.

Actually, pre Scout, we had some good discussions on this stuff. Mike Honcho contributed a lot. Like now, most would rather scoff than look at the facts and learn.

they were also smaller because they had to fit through all of the tunnels during transport

and the Germans found out that their behemoth tanks could not fit on all the rail systems encountered. They had to have crap like transport tracks and removal of skirts and armor in order to use some rail systems.

Their tanks were so big that it was important that they get rail transport most of the way to the battle because they couldnt eat up the service period driving to the fight.

I think most of our stuff once it hit land ended up driving all the way across Europe.
 
Never. We don't need a Division of armor to get shit done. Combined Arms solves most of our issues. We just call the Army when we need them to stand guard over shit, and don't have to worry about them having the bad guys dance circles around their slow asses. :LOL:

I'd give 'em numbers, yeah, but it was a POS and didn't last long at all. This is guys who had 'em saying this. Although I had an uncle or something I never met that bought one after WW2 when this building had to be demolished and had to be done by hand, no room for a wrecking ball and couldn't use demo. Nobody wanted the job (there is actually a demolition company that will no-shit take it down with nothing but hand power). He had the idea of driving through it over and over until it just crumbled. It worked and he came out a bandit.

The Russians actually win out on the the best tank of WW2. They had a few actually.

The German shit just wasn't produced in enough numbers and were too complex if they broke. They also had Hitler.

the Russian tanks were designed in Patterson NJ in the 30's , the US Army didn't like the design and went with something else.

OF historical note, the Marines never designed a tank in their history, they have these floating things that think they are tanks that can be stopped buy a 12.7 easily.
