the wife and i are going to be taking a pistol self defense class.

we need a "quality" pistol holster and mag pouch that can hold 2 mags.

i picked up an uncle mike's reflex retention holster, but i didn't care for it.

these will be for sig 226 9mm with rails (and a 229 9mm threaded barrel once i decide to tell her i bought one!), and both pistols have threaded barrels.

thanks guys.

There are tons of "quality" holsters out there that will get the job done, but its best to figure out: a) what the class requires in terms of equipment (some don't have any requirements at all and let the user select at random whatever they want/need based on their own, individual requirements while some have highly specific requirements); b) what you want in terms of materials/design/construction/etc.; c) your budget; and d) what's your timeframe for needing the gear as some mfgs have LONG waits but are worth the wait (at a min., you can get a stop-gap for both if the class is upcoming, but we'll still need to know if that's an issue)? ;)

ORDs advice is very good, take it into account. And to add a few specific things. When speaking of holsters it really depends on what you like in a holster. My personal opinion is that you don't get any better then Garrett Industries in terms of holsters. But other companies, such as Comp-Tac, Tucker Gun leather, and Bravo Concealment, all do good work and can provide you will the gear you need.

You probably will not be allowed to use retention holsters in a class. Garrett Industries is good, and have a short turn around time. I would also look at G-Code holsters and PerSecSystems.com. Some action ranges do not allow canted holsters, so you should check that before purchasing.

In addition to the advice already given, I would recommend that you run the class with the holster/gun combo that you will be carrying CCW (if that is your plan). If that is not your plan, the class or range won't allow drawing from concealed or whatever, look at a good quality belt holster that you can also use as a range holster. Raven concealment has quick ship holsters if you need one fast, DSG arms usually has stuff in stock, Blade-tech, G-Code, comp-tac, etc. I use Zero Concealment and am very happy with their products but you are looking at 30 days to get a custom holster. In the mean time here is a list of holster makers if you want to do some research... Kydex Holster Makers

OP,

Agree with Brabo's statement above: "I would recommend that you run the class with the holster/gun combo that you will be carrying CCW (if that is your plan)."

Comp-Tac makes great Kydex gear.

as far as budget, whatever it takes. i figured i'd try the uncle mike's reflex, but like i said i didn't like it.

we have not scheduled the class yet.

material, probably a plastic/kydex type. the leather and nylon type will hold moisture and contribute to rust, if i am not mistaken.

the only spec the instructor gave was a quality holster. it has to be OWB, it needs to be easily drawn and reholstered. that is why i ditched the uncle mike's reflex. i am sure with practice it will be fine, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

as far as what i like, i have no idea. i think i would prefer the belt loop to be closer to the grip, rather than down by the front of the trigger guard, unless there is a reason not to do that.
cover the muzzle so shit doesn't get into the barrel.
be secure to me, and not floppy like the unlce mike's reflex.
cant-no cant, i think i would rather go with a no cant.

currently, for CC, i use one of those soft uncle mike's IWB that are $12 for my sig 938 and XDs-9. it doesn't provide alot of bulk.

Seeing as money is not an issue then you have lots of options. When speaking of all kydex construction there is not shortage of suppliers. My favorites in this category, Comp-Tac and Bravo Concealment, are where I look. But I do want to address your comment about leather/nylon. Both materials can retain moisture. But it is not a common thing thus I would not put to much thought into it. Unless you store your firearm in the holster for extended periods of time without maintance this really isn't an issue. Like I said before Garrett is where I look these days for my holsters. Most of their designs consist of a Kydex shell wiht leather lining. To me it is a great compromise.
