Just got back from ASC and realized I need an another option for a faster round. My present load is a 175gr.SMK with RE15 and win brass pushing at 2660fps..

Anyone have any suggestions that will be ballistically better? 155grs. scenars vs. bergers....etc...need something hot!

45.3 Grn Varget pushing a 155 Scenar, Lapua brass, CCI LG primers, 2830 FPS, COAL (measured at the ojive) 2.200. More than capable to the 400 yds I have to shoot.

new style 155 gr. sierra palmas(.508 bc)48.5 grains of vv550,win. brass,210m primers gets me 2850 and.5 moa @ 100 out of my 24" remmy r5.OAL is 2.82.can run them faster with more powder but accuracy suffers in my rifle.

Heres some popular powders that work with the 155 Scenar. Some are better than others but they will all work. My personal experience is with Benchmark, IMR-3130,& RL-15. I have an 8LB jug of the 8208 waiting on my .308 when I get it back from the smith. It's supposed to be "THE" powder in the .308 for the 155's. We'll see.

H-4895, Benchmark, A-2460, Ramshot TAC, IMR-3031, Varget, IMR-4064, A-2520, VV N-140 & 150, RL-15, IMR-8208XBR

Re: Need a new .308 screaming load

Anyone have any RE15 loads? Is there an "accuracy node" or velocity the 155s like to be pushed to inorder to be the most accurate?

Re: Need a new .308 screaming load

.308 don't scream. Read Brian Litz's book, "Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting". Say that once again...buy and read Brian Litz's book. Better BC, better ballistics. You want more steam? .30-06 or .300 Winnie. More? Go .338 Lapua. You can't get a quart out of a pint pot. JMHO

Well, you can but only by being stupid

Re: Need a new .308 screaming load

Out of AI AW 2950 fps 24" barrel, out of 22" Kreiger 2920 no pressure sighs or enlarged primer pockets. Due to recent advances in powders easy to reach with out being hard on cases. Before primer pockets might start getting loose after 4-5 firing and would have to reform with a Hart primer reform tool, doing that and annealing those cases have 20+ firings.

Running at 2950 fps does erode the throat more than a 175 at 2690. I check them at about 4500 rds and maybe bump back the chamber, depends how the shoot adn accuracy required.

The advances in powders has changed what is safley possible such as the velocities RL-17 has given the heavy .308 bullets ( 190, 210 208 gr) the ,243 shooters as well as the 6.5 x 47 are rewriting what is possible.

because a new load is a lot cheaper than a new rifle and if you don't want/need a fast flat load all the time why waste the cash on another gun? If you really need ballistics like this a lot of the time, fine get a 260, but if not it is a great extension of capability for little cash.

Anyone got a 155 gr Scenar at ~2900 fps out of a 24" barrel with RL15?

It's 2735fps at 70 degrees out of a 24" bbl with a .580 BC bullet. Run the math on that one.

I got a box of 155 Palmas a week ago, and loaded about 20 of them on top of RL15. First batch of 10 was 44 gr, 2nd batch was 44.5. 10 were pushed to .08" from the lands and the other 10 were .12", which yielded a base to ogive length of 2.232". The 44.5s at .12" took the cake. Shot .13 MOA at 200 yds, and I was astounded.

Re: Need a new .308 screaming load

Btw, there is no universal accuracy node. What works in my rifle may shoot like complete dogshit in yours. Do an OCW test with the RL15, from 42 gr to 46 in .3 gr increments and see what you get.

Re: Need a new .308 screaming load

The one I had just hated RE15, but did consistent tight little knots in the low .4's with 49.5 of Ramshot Big Game under a 155 AMAX at 2980.
