I've decided my next long gun is going to be a precision rifle. Most of my rifle experience has been with AR format guns in various calibers and so I've decided on a bolt action rather than an AR10 platform. I've had a Ruger 77 in .30-06 for years, but I don't feel hunting out to 300 yards is the same kind of experience, so I still consider myself a newbie.
What I'm thinking of so far is starting with a Remington 700 5R in .308 Winchester. I was leaning towards a .300 Winchester Mag at first, but I seriously doubt I'll be doing any shootin past 1000 yards, plus I'm already set up for reloading the .308. (Is there any significant advantage to the .300 Mag for a recreational/hunting/competition rifle?)
I'm currently waiting on a YHM .308 Titanium Phantom for my .300 Blackout SBR. Is there any reason why I shouldn't go with a threaded barrel and YHM QD brake?
As I understand it the current factory Remington triggers leave something to be desired. Again, I know about AR aftermarket triggers, but what's a good trigger for the 700?
For the chassis I was first looking at the JAE stock, but they are quite expensive when you start adding on all the options, and the wait time is supposed to be long. My second choice would be a AICS. The folding stock option is cool, but is it a practical upgrade worth the price?
As for optics the only premium glass I have experience with is my 2-12x Valdada. It's been a great scope for my 6.5 Grendel AR, but probably not the best choice for this kind of bolt gun project. My glass budget is going to be about $1800, so what are some good options? Should I be looking for a 1st or 2nd focal plane scope? When you're going out to 1000 yards how much magnification do you really need?
I'm sure there are probably other things to consider as well, but that's all I can think of right now. Any and all advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
