Hey guys I need some suggestions for a 300BO upper. I'm looking for a 16.5" and I will be shooting subsonic through a suppressor probably at least 50% of the time. It will be going on my Colt M4 lower, so I don't want something that costs more than the entire 5.56 rifle that I have but I don't want a piece of shit either.
Please let me know what you guys recommend and just as importantly, WHY.
Thanks

steve

I have a 300 blk pistol 9" and am quite satisfied with my BCM upper. You can find cheaper but I like the value ~$600 but you can find some lower depending on rails and barrel. Mainly hand load but runs everything I have thrown at it so far subs and supersonic (plus priv and Remington loads) weights ranging from 110 gr through 220 all good.

OK, that's not too rough. I had a 16" one built out of nice quality parts and cerakoted fancy colors for less than $800 (including the ~15" free float rail). So you should be able to put the quality parts of your choice together yourself for way less, or even get a shop to do it from scratch, sans cerakote for less than $700 easy.

I take it you plan to use the original bcg and
charging handle when you switch back and forth?

Cost is the main thing. Assuming your original rifle is in 5.56, it's the exact same bolt and carrier you'd use for a 300 blackout, so why drop the cash on 2? Same goes for charging handle; in my case, I have a nice ambidextrous easy to use charging handle, and i want the features it offers when using my 300 blackout, so i just use it.

Adding a new BCG and charging handle can add $300+ to the cost, and wild really just be spare parts lying around.

Ok, so do you have a resource to a parts list I would need for the upper minus the BCG? Barrel, gas block, gas tube, fore grip I know, but what else?
Know of any good links that walks a guy through putting one together?

Upper receiver, and anything your barrel of choice needs to attach to the upper receiver (that's the one thing I haven't personally messed with).

If you haven't built an AR upper, and aren't looking to start doing it more often; I'd have a shop put one together for you.

If you want, I can point you to the place I used.

If you want to build your own without a shop helping, you'll get better guidance starting a new thread geared towards how to build an upper.

Short answer is I'd build one. It's pretty easy to do if you're fairly handy and have a few tools (or can borrow some).

You'll get a lot more value and end up with the upper you really want if you go that route. Plenty of videos and on line resources to help you figure out how to do that. Parts are really cheap right now too. Building a .300 BLK upper is exactly the same as building a 5.56 upper, with the exception of the barrel and the use of a pistol length gas system (as others have said, use a pistol length gas tube regardless of the length of your barrel).

It's not necessary, but I recommend an adjustable gas block. Especially if you plan on shooting subsonic ammo without a suppressor. With a can, there is enough back pressure to not make that a necessity, but it is still nice to be able to tune your rifle's gas system anyway.

Build it, thats the only way to go if you want a quality, accurate upper for the cheapest price. Otherwise just grab a BCM or similar and be done with it.

Aero Precision Assembled Upper Receiver - $69.99 @ Primary Arms
Rainier UltraMatch (Shilen) 300blk 16" SS Barrel - On Sale $215.43 @ Rainier Arms
SLR Sentry 7 Adjustable Gas Block - $119 @ SLR Rifleworks
Seekins Precision MLOK or Keymod Handguard - $150-$175 @ Primary Arms
Pistol Length Gas Tube - $12 @ Primary Arms

Total without BCG and CH - $592
Add BCG & CH total is - $785

If you need help, feel free to order the parts and ship them to me and I could put it together for you and tune the gas system for supers and ship back if you dont want to buy the tools.

Here's how my Rainier Ultramatch 10.5" 300blk shoots my 125TMK handloads.

I purchased a complete 300 Blackout from Aims Surplus out of Ohio for just under $500. It's from Radical Firearms, 16" barrel and all military spec.
My purchase was over a year ago, prices are a little more now, but Radical Firearms makes good stuff.
So far everything I've put in it has fired with no problems.
The rifle really likes Hornady 110 gr stuff.
Vortex Optics Scope is on top.
It's a nail driver!

What is the distance of those groups?

Those groups were shot with a Leupold Mark 4 MR/T 1.5-5x20 CM-R2 just for load development. It sports a Aimpoint T1. It wasnt built for runnning long distances, I just wanted to test my loads with the higher powered scope. After shooting the above target I took it to the long range and shot steel out to 500yds. It hit every piece of steel from 300-500 without a single miss. I built the gun for personal defense/car gun for head shots 100yds and in. Its very capable. One of my favorite guns.
