Which is best? New Ruger American in 270 no scope for $299.99 +tax and background check or a used Marlin XL7 270 with Nikon prostaff scope and 120 rounds of various ammo for $350 out the door? Any help is greatly appreciated. I was also looking at a Savage Axis II in 270.

Yeah, hunting a bit and range. I've got an ar, a Marlin 336w 30-30 and a Savage Trophy Hunter xp in 308. Just looking for something to add to the stable. Just the best out of those for the money?

Do you know the history of the Marlin? Sometimes it is just as easy to go new, and then at least you get to write it's story. That said, I believe Seekins makes the barrels for the Rugers, which is a nice touch.

Ruger American, I remember seeing the Marlin XL7's at Cabelas a decade ago. Rough action, I think it was from the cast bolt, or the bolt was poorly finished. Blind mag, no replacement stocks or any after market support. I don't know if they are even made anymore and I'd be afraid of finding parts. At least the Ruger can be upgraded.

Edited to fix engrish.

Aftermarket support is a big thing. I have a T/C Venture that I hunt with the odd time and I wanted to change the stock out. Nope! Not a chance! Aftermarket support is easy to overlook at times when you're purchasing a new rifle, but it sure can bite later on. Conversely, having a rifle with a lot of aftermarket support can give you the opportunity to turn it into exactly what you want/need if it isn't already there from factory.

My 204 Ruger had great accuracy out the box, and have a Nikon 18 power target scope on it now.
Great solid action, but my barrel could use a change out after 2000 plus rounds. Looking at a prefit, but it is hard to find a barrel nut wrench. I may have to make the wrench myself.
