ok i have .308 win that i like
i want a new rifle that is capable of 1500 yards
at that distance i would be shooting 1 or 2 times a year
i am memeber at gun range that has 1000 yard range so it would get used up to 1000 yards a lot.
i have been thinking of 338 lapua magnum, 338 edge or 375 cheytac
what caliber would you recomend?
also i was thinking using rem action and get it redone or go with custom like lawton and have them do all of it barell action and muzlebreak
so many options it is making my head spin
thanks guys

Re: need advise

Not to deter you from getting any ole thing your heart desires, but any 7mm case capable of launching the 180 Grain Berger VLD to at least 2850 FPS, will also get you to 1500 yds end on. And it would be a might cheaper to feed than any of the big 338's or 375's.

Re: need advise

hunt antelope @ extended ranges where my 308 can't reach them
weight is an issue but i'm willing to deal with it

shoot in a league @ our club 600,800 and 1000 yards and be competative

Re: need advise

OK, Pronghorn being on the smallish side, means that shots over 800 yds or so are really not in the offing. Not being preachy, but realistic as to cold bore accuracy.

Certainly 800 yds or less is well within the envelope of an accurate 7mm w/180 grain Berger on Lt. big game. And 338 or bigger is almost overkill....

Recoil and blast will certainly be less with a hot 7mm v a hot 338 as well.

As to being competitive, there are plenty of accurate rifles, that will do the job, but how's the loose nut behind the trigger? Indian trumps arrow......

Re: need advise

Personally I use my 308 for 600 to 1000 yards,

Something you need to take into consideration is how much per round are you willing to pay for .XXX Remingchester long short magnum? The cartridges you mentioned start at a dollar per BULLET and go up from that. Then figure you can handload 75 per pound of powder. And the brass is how much...? You're going to loose the guilt edge in the barrel after 1000 rounds. Barrel costing $300 and another $300 to chamber and fit.

Consider everything and make an informed decision. Don't do like a young man I know and have a beautiful rifle built and then he couldn't afford to shoot it. He used his income tax money to pay for the rifle. But when that was gone he was against the wall. He didn't use any of that money for handloading equipment or supplies. I've helped him out a little. But I told him recently he needs to buy his own toys. He's an acquaintance. I don't know him enough to leave him the keys to my house and shop. That isn't in the future.

Re: need advise

the loose nut can shoot i think
i do shoot nra highpower
and uspsa with pistols
so i have some time behind the gun
i did shoot my buddy's 7mm rem mag and it felt good not too much recoil but i am figuring this will be my last gun for at least 5-10 years so i need something that will pretty much do anything i want it to

when it comes to bullet prices i'm not to woried about that
i own reloading equipment so it would be not to bad
