hi guys....

I have a bit of a problem finding the material of a middle layer of clothing

My problem is that the parka I have has a fleece liner and almost all of the thicker fabrics stick like hell on it to the extend that force is required to pullthrow my arms....canvas shirts are especially nasty 9civil attire of course)

going with a thermal and a thing shiort inner layer does not always cutit in strong cold, but I cannnot find any practical solution...

So..is there a fabric that is slippery? LOL..BTW I have not tried the softshells yet and they are hard to find in my area...

Any suggestions>?
Thanks, Kostas

Kostas - not sure if you're interested in looking at a complete new outer/mid/base layer or an ECWS rig but I'd be happy to recommend TAD Gear (especially their Merino midlayers with a hardshell outer) - they ship to Europe and, whilst not cheap, they've become my favourite combo and handle everything the UK can throw at them from autumn through winter to spring.

I picked up a an Icebreaker merino base layer set (vest and pants) on a trip to New Zealand late last year - also very happy with them.

Here's the links:

Would also suggest a look at Arktis if you need more "issue" spec kit. I've gort a pair of their waterproof ripstops...great kit!:

but I bought from here: http://www.lansdaleltd.com/index.php

I don't know what temp range you're looking to cover? This is what I've been using this year.

The micro-down insulation is synthetic and you don't have to worry about it getting wet like you do with traditional down.

Mine has had the hood removed and then the collar sewn back up. This is made as a mid-layer insulating jacket and the nylon outer is slippery and won't hang on fleece, or wool.

It's lightweight and stuffable. Mine weighs a little over 20 ounces with no hood, including the stuff sack that it comes with. It's very warm. In temps down to the teens I've found that I can get by with just a fleece top and this jacket as an outerlayer. It's not waterproof, but at the temps I wear it that's not a concern. It's not a jacket that I would even consider when active and the temps are above 30°, it's just too warm for that. If I'm actively hunting I carry it in my pack and pull it out if I stop and am sitting for awhile.

Re: Need clothes middle layer advice

Hi Kostas,
Ice Breaker is the way to go for great insulation.
However, the issue you're having with friction might be best resolved with a polyester midlayer that has a tighly knit outer layer-like a softshell. You should be able to find Craft and Odlo midlayers in Europe. If you have access to US brands lok for Mountain Hardware and Patagonia-both make great midlayer products. I'd also suggest looking for a Nike ACG midlayer that you can find in Europe- Look for the Straight Shot Composite Jacket Style # 337006.
Hope this helps.

This is common for outdoor clothing. Dump the fleece and go with a Primaloft of similar sweater.

With the Pertex shell, it will slide on layers under it and on top of it. Evan Jones at ID will stitch one up in camo for you if you ask and have time.

I also have had great success with WildThings. The past co-owner Bouchard and I talked a lot about kit design before their divorce and Titoune got the company.

If you need less insulation;

This simple wind shirt will slide between layers and adds quite a bit of warm for just a few ounces.

Most soft shells now have a fleece backing and will also have friction with under layers. Try to find Schoeller Dynamic soft shell, it has a hard backing and slides over fleece with ease. I have tested most soft shell fabrics in Alaska and keep coming back to Dynamic.

I have worn in Alaska down in the -40s:

Patagonia Capeline silk weight t shirt and briefs worn quite snug to the body
Micro fiber wind shirt
Patagonia R1 fleece top and bottoms
Primaloft sweater
Black Diamond Guide top and pants made from Schoeller Dynamic

My preferred high loft is;

I had some input into the current version of the Dolomitti.

I also wear the EP jacket as a soft shell.

Both ID and WildThings have a military contract and will stitch up almost anything in a camo pattern. These are the two best outdoor clothing companies I have ever tested, bar none.
