I’m getting ready to bed my first rifle and I went to grab the release agent I planed on using ( kiwi shoe polish ) and didn’t realize it had a small hole on top of the container and all the polish has dried up. I was wondering if I could use my Imperial sizing die wax instead. Please oh wise ones of the hide help this simpleminded guy out

Thanks

I magine.

I've used Hornady. But don't go light on the coating, and if the receiver is not a SMOOTH coated or a polished exterior, wait for the wax.

Trouble with bedding usually stems from mechanical bonding. If it's matte blued, DON'T go there.

The nicest looking bedding jobs I've seen were done by LRI, I bought a can of what they use.

Kelly McMillan said Johnson Paste Wax was the best there is, I bought a can of that too.

Anything the epoxy won't stick to works.

Wax is the preferred because people can see it and it is thicker.

Not bad for my first time, it’s definitely not the prettiest but it did work for the most part. It did stick to the barrel for some reason I know I covered it pretty well but it still stuck so I had to sand that off. I’ll throw up some pics in a little bit

When you're applying any release agent, always apply it where needed, and then expand that area. Same goes for tape. If you think you missed a spot, apply it again.

When I bedded my action, I used kiwi and applied it all over the receiver and barrel. I also taped the entire stock where I didn't want any bedding compound to stick. It came out nice, and released very well. Preparation is everything.

Just quoted for emphasis.

I have a 26inch barrel and I covered at least 25 inch’s of that haha. I tapped the entire stock just because I knew it was going to be messy with it being my first time. I think I screwed up when I but the compound in the stock, I didn’t put enough in there so I pulled the action back out and packed a bunch more in and then set the action back in. When I bought the stock (used) it already had a bedding job done to it. it looked like jb weld and it had air bubbles everywhere, so after grinding all that out there was a large area that had to be filled by the compound. Not trying to make excuses but I don’t think it came out to bad all things considered. Yea my nice stainless barrel is a little jacked up nothing a little cerakote can’t fix, and that’s already going to be taking care of by a member on here (BigRso) he’s done really good work for me in the past. I really appreciate everyone weighing in on the matter, I can’t wait to try in again with some different techniques.
Thanks guys

Looks better than I thought it would judging by your hurry to get it done.

Good for you for going balls deep.

Someday I hope to have the guts.

The first rifle I bedded was my el cheapo rem 700 270. Between that and reloading the gun is completely different. On that bedding job I was kind of in a hurry/inexperienced so there is still some black residue that came out of the sides. The imperfections from this first bedding job I made sure to learn from.

When I did my second gun I took the lessons/experiences from that first job and it came out looking very nice.

Keep trying and they will only get better and better.

Has anyone ever bedded a Cerakoted barreled action without using a release agent? I have tried to get a couple of kinds of epoxy to stick to my Cerakote color swatches. It doesn't adhere to them.
