I can get a new in the box Remington 700 Tactical SPS 308 complete Package with SFWA 10 x 42 Super Sniper Scope Burris Xtreme rings, Butler Creek Lens Caps and 6-9 Tactical bipod for 700.00

or

A Winchester M70 Laredo in 7mm rem mag, with Timney trigger, HS Precision stock, Glass bedded, 600ish round count, BOSS system installed for 600.00. I believe it has a 24" barrel or maybe 26".

Which way should I go? It will be one of my first long range rifles and used for this hunting season as well for deer. Will spend alot of its life at the range though.

SPS

You want "quick help".....there's you a quick answer. Is your own opinion not that important? Why does mine or the next guys opinion mean so much to you? If you've spent anytime at all reading on this site you know that there are very few Winchester M70 fans on here so right away you know your not going to get many recommendations for the M70. Do you need a 7mm mag to shoot deer with? How much reall "long range" hunting are you going to be doing? And what do you consider long range?? Will a 175gr bullet from a .308 not kill the animals where you live?

Re: Need Help on decision, quick!

I'd vote for the 308 as it will give you longer barrel life, larger selection of factory ammo, and tons of available data for drop/lead.

7RM is a great round but if you are going to be spending a lot of time on the range, will be much harder on barrel and is pretty much handload only deal for "match" type ammo.

Re: Need Help on decision, quick!

Thanks guys. I have been on the fence about it, and Trevor, I ask because others are wiser than myself at the things that matter, that sometimes I often may not consider. Such as.....
-I didnt know the 7mm RM would eat the barrel up faster
-I did not think about how there is more range data present for the 308 than there is for the 7mm RM
-I do not reload myself, and didnt even think about how there are way more match ammos out there for the .308 than the 7mm.

SO that is why I chose to post my post and ask and see what others opinions are. Sometimes opinions lead to and spark up overlooked details.

Thats my .02 worth.

Re: Need Help on decision, quick!

As far as caliber choices go I would agree with all of the guys above about the 308 vs. 7mmRM. The 308 is less expensive to feed and easier to find ammo for. You will get 2x to 3x the barrel life compared to the 7mmRM too.

Now as far as pure mechanical design I will take a Model 70 over a 700 any day, and yes I own both.

One of the big things that a 700 has going for it is that it is the "small block Chevy" of rifles. Aftermarket parts galore. Also with it's cylindrical body it is a good base action to start with for accurizing.

I still feel that the M70 is a better action because of the following:

- Controlled Round Feed
- Blade ejector
- Flat bottom receiver
- Integral recoil lug
- Coned breaching
- Both of the bolt lug raceways are blocked when in battery. Helps keep gasses out of your face in the event of a case failure.
- Left gas block serves as contact point for bolt stop instead of the bolt lug.
- Three position safety
- Reliable two lever open trigger
- Bolt handle won't break loose like a Remmy. It isn't soldered straight to the outside of the bolt body.
- Well finished and machined. (except for the post 64's made in the 70's)

Re: Need Help on decision, quick!

Your getting a spanking deal on the 700. My vote goes Remington all the way in this one. Although i do love the M70 action for the reasons stated above. All in all, i definatly think the 700 is a better idea if your budget is reletively limited
