Need help with two rifles:

1st rifle: Savage 10FP 308. I want to use the Mils on this rifle. My first pick is the 10x42 30mm tube SWFA, 2nd I was looking at the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10x40 1" tube. Both scopes cost the same. Last in the running would be the TR2 Nitrex.

2nd rifle: Winchester M70 Coyote 243. This rifle will be used for busting yotes. Now I have been comparing and reading reviews on the Nikon Monarch and Buckmaster, Ziess conquest 3x9x40 (not sure if I need more power?) Nitrex (best bang for the buck) and Weaver.

The range I belong to has a 200 yard range, but some of the farm lands I frequent can get out there. So what would be my best avenues?

Thanks, Dan

I've only bought a few scopes. My Winchester M70 308 deer rifle has a 3x9x40 Monarch and my Handi rifle HB has a 3x9x40 prostaff. I'm very pleased with both scopes, but just wanting to get advise from SH members that have a lot more knowledge than I do.

When you said use he same scope on both, would you recommend using the same power also?

Re: Need help scoping two rifles...

I would not recommend a fixed 10x for coyotes.

You don't know if your shot is going to be 25 yards or 225 yards.

Trying to bust a fast moving dog at 50 yards with a 10x scope will be very difficult.

I would put the Weaver 3-10 on both rifles.

Sure, if you keep consistency between your rifles, you will have more consistent outcomes. Plus you will be very familiar with the operation and features. I agree though, you would probably do better with a variable 3-9 or similar. The question I asked was in reference to the apparent favoritism in your listed choice of scopes, one rifle had better options listed than the other. I asked because the two jobs listed for these rifles require the same amount of respect, and therefore, they should both be given the best optical option available that you can afford. I say, pick one,(or two) and practice with it(them) until you are at your best. Good luck!!

Re: Need help scoping two rifles...

I love Nikon optics. I've never seen a coyote, so I'm not sure how big they are, so I'm guessing the size of a small dog?

For seeing and shooting an animal that small, maybe look at the 4.5-14x Buckmasters. Nikon's BDC reticle might be worth looking into.

The Prostaff is a great scope for the money. I plan on throwing a 3-12 Monarch on my next deer rifle.
