I bought an AIAW off the Hide and the pic rail has 2 mounting screws that have come loose. The epoxy that Accuracy International mounts the rail to the rifle with is also broke free. Once I remove the screws the rail moves back and forth about 1/8" inch on the integral dove tail. It appears that someone has had problems with this in the past because one of the screws' allen is rounded so I can not tighten. Does the pic rail slide off the dovetail, so I can use a dovetail scope mount, or can the pic rail be drilled and tapped for additional screws. Any info or sugestions will help. Thanks.

Re: Need help with AIAW pic rail

The small allen screws are as usefull as tits on a boar in terms of holding the picatinny rail down. The epoxy is what keeps it solid. If the epoxy is not holding it you will either need to remove the rail and expoy it again or just use the 11mm rail underneith it (one less thing to go wrong).

The reason the rail moves 1/8" is that there is also a roll pin keeping the rail in - you should be able up spot it and remouve it (it needs to be removed upwards) as it sits in a machined oval slot in the received. Not an issue - but dont confuse it with the barrel collect pin ( also not likely as it is not in the picatinny rail).

The AI picatinny rails are / were made by Brugger & Thomet so you can pick another up if you screw it up.

FWIW I removed the picatinny rail on my AWSM - I needed a longer rail at the time, the hard part was getting rid of the epoxy.

Re: Need help with AIAW pic rail

David, I appreciate your help, but I cannot find the roll pin that I must remove first. Where should it be located on the rail? My pic rail has 2 screw holes where the screws were installed and 3 other holes that appear to have a gray epoxy in them. Two of the holes are flushed out to the top of the rail with epoxy and 1 hole looks as is if the epoxy is below the bottom of the rail . My rifle was made in 03. When you did remove the rail, what did you use to clean off the epoxy. Thank you, Kevin.

Re: Need help with AIAW pic rail

Kevin, I will send you a PM.

The three epoxy filled holes will have pins in them, the centre one (flush with the receiver) will have a stainless steel dowel 3mm dia by 5mm long DO NOT REMOVE THIS. THIS IS THE LOCKING RING RETAING PIN. THE BOLT LOCKS INTO THE LOCKING RING. The two holes either side will contain roll pins 4mm dia by 6mm long, remove these

To remove the epoxy I used a knife and wood work chisel and also a small srcew driver on the holes the clean the epoxy away.

David.

Re: Need help with AIAW pic rail

desertshooter: It sounds like someone has been tampering with it vice it was a problem. the screws don't round themselves out and the epoxy doesn't just come loose. please contact me with your info so we can get this rifle fixed and back in service. Email, PM or call me, thanks.
