I've been reading posts and lurking around here for awhile, but this will be my first post on this part of the forum.I just recently got the itch to put together a tactical rifle.I'm big into hunting,so most of my other rifles are hunting based(besides an AR).I recently put together this:
Remington 700 SPS Tactical
-US Optics 20 Moa base
-Mcmillan A5

Now comes the hard part, finding a scope.I have a few in mind, just no experience with the tactical scopes.

-US Optics ST-10 with the EREK knob,ERGO parallax,I'm thinking the MOA reticle
-IOR 3.5-18x42 with the "SH" MP-8 reticle
-Nightforce NXS 3.5-15 with the NP-R1 reticle
-SWFA SS 5-20
-Bushnell HDMR with the G2 reticle

I was dead set on the ST-10 considering 99% of my shooting will be inside of 300yds.Also,being new to ranging reticles and/or dialing,I figured a fixed power would be easiest to start with.It seems to be a great scope and I'm still leaning towards buying it,it seems to be the best to me for my application.I think for the main distances I'll be shooting,it should work great but again I'm new to this and is why I posted to get advice.I have a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20 on another rifle, and honestly I don't care for it so not really looking at the MK4's.I figured if I start moving out,I can upgrade later.Am I in the right direction?I have about $1500-1600 to spend.

The NSX 5-22 will take you out to the 600Yd line if your eyes are good , you can always turn the power down. If you get addicted like me you won't be sorry for the extra power, and it still has a lot of turret adjustment to work with.

But you can't say what magnification is needed at a specific distance unless you also specify the size of the target. And if you use hold overs and/or hold your wind you could very likely be sorry for getting the extra power on a SFP scope.
