So, I have sold all of my hunting set ups and am going to attempt the one rifle for all things. I know I will be sacrificing a little in all areas. So, I now have short bareled GAP in .308. I will use it for hunting deer and long range shooting. I have a NIB Leupold VXIIILR in 4.5-14x50. Some of my shots on deer are as close as 20 yrds. So, is this scope a good choice for the above, or should I be looking at something else. I can return the scope as it is still in the plastic.TIA

Good questions. Which of the above would be better for a do it all rifle ? I will do most of my shooting at 500 yds or less. I don't get the oppertunity to shoot farther than that very often. As far as price $1500 or less

Re: Need Help with scope selection

Well, me personally I prefer FFP for the do-all weapons but they always come with a higher price tag. My suggestion is something with a top end of 10-12x and bottom around 2-3x for those close range hunting shots.

A few suggestions for that range, focusing on quality and durability, in no particular order:

Nightforce 2.5-10x32 (SFP, illuminated and lightweight)
USO 1.8-10x37 (used to get close to your budget, FFP)
SWFA SS 3-9x42 (lightweight, save you on cost and one hell of a scope for the price)

Another you might want to consider is the Bushnell HDMR with the G2 reticle, group buy going on now. IOR has many offerings in your range too, but I have little experience with them and won't go into them any further.

Thanks. The store I bought the Leupold does not sell any of those brands. I can not return it, only exhange it. Maybe I should try to sell it and look elsewhere.
