I have no need for it, but for some reason I think I want a 7-08. I am not new to firearms, but am still new to the custom build arena. I started reading things on this site a couple of years ago, about the time I ordered my first custom. I wish I had joined this site and ask some question first, as I feel I made some mistakes on that one. I want to avoid that again if possible.
First of all, I shoot left handed and my wife shoots right handed. 100% of her shooting is at paper and steel. 99% of my shooting is also paper and steel, with the other 1% hunting. I hunt some big fields as well as bottom ground, so a long shot can be the norm.
I had made arrangements to have a 7-08 built on a right hand Rem 700 action and call it my wife’s rifle, but things didn’t pan out on that deal. With that not working out, I talked with Mike @ UGSW and he is building her a 220 Swift. She does not know about it yet, but I am excited enough for both of us!
Now here are my options for the 7-08;
Option #1, I have a LH Rem 700 VSF chambered in 308 that has approximately 2500 rounds through it. It is in the HS stock, which I get along with fine, so cost for this would be $1,000-1,500 depending on DBM and finish.
Option #2, I have a Rem 700 RH action that has been trued (in prep for the 7-08 build for my wife) along with an A5 stock, cost for this would be $1,500-2,000 again depending on some options.
Option #3, I have a custom built 7mm RM, built around a LH Rem 700. This rifle has 909 rounds down it. I could have it set back and rechambered, or (this is where the big decision comes in) do as Mike has suggested, rechamber it to 280AI. I know nothing about the 280AI. I have measured the throat and it is eroded in the .006-.007 range, this from the unfired measurement.
My trouble with #3 is I don’t feel this rifle has ever shot like it should, so in using the same barrel am I chasing my tail, or could it be as some have said the belted case? Also, if I do this, I’ll still want a 7-08 and I'll have to do option 1 or 2 at a later date (which is not all bad).
I know this is long, but it cost just as much to do it wrong as it does to do it right.

Thanks for any help /ideas.

Re: Need opinion / help with decision on build.

I'm not a big fan of used barrels, especially when your taking the time to do a whole build, you may as well spend a little more and get a new one.
It sounds like you've got the rest hammered out, sounds like you could do both. So I guess the only question is LA or SA? or both. May I suggest both?

Re: Need opinion / help with decision on build.

I agree. Spend your money on a new barrel. In my shop there comes a point in a barrels life I will not rechamber one. To much heat checking filled with carbon. Hard on reamers and it is of little value for the customer. It's like putting a used tire on a car. It get's you back up and running but it won't last long.

BTW I love a 280AI but it just duplicates your Rem Mag.

Re: Need opinion / help with decision on build.

User friendly covers a lot of territory. There are two things that are unfriendly in the world of wildcat cartridges.

1. case forming meaning necking up, necking down and shortening the case etc. The necking part isn't bad but I have a hunting rifle chambered in a .100 short 6-284. Talk about stupid. Should have been a 243 AI. You get the idea.

2. Fireforming the brass to fit the improved chamber. Easy enough to do with loaded bullets seated long. I do it now in all my so called "improved" cases using Unique and instant grits then fireform. No need to waste bullets, a lot of powder and barrel life.

Other than those factors loading for it is just like any other round. Replace what you used up. I've built three for myself over the years. It was my go to elk caliber for years shooting 160's.

Re: Need opinion / help with decision on build.

I think I'll stay away from the wildcat cartridges. A buddy has a 7 short mag from GAP that shoots really good, I may just order a barrel and have it chambered in that. I can do the 7-08 another day. I'm wanting to stay with the 7mm bullet, as during the time it took to build the 7mag, I bought bullets everytime I could find them, so I have lots to use up.

Re: Need opinion / help with decision on build.

Don't decide on the cartridge because a buddies rifle shoots well. Built properly, regardless of caliber, they will all shoot accurately. I'm not a fan of the WSM's. Too much hype and too many feeding problems. Are you going to run DM system?

Re: Need opinion / help with decision on build.

You are right of course, just because somebody has a Ford that runs good does not mean everyone will have.
I do not have a DM on the 7mag, but have had no problem with lenght of shells. I think on the new build it will have a DM.

Re: Need opinion / help with decision on build.

If you want the 7-08, you won't rest until you have one. I'll not argue or recommend calibers, as you want what you want, plain and simple. Get yourself the 7-08.
If it's not a high priority at this time, start yourself a "Christmas Club" or cookie jar account. Save big enough to do it right. You say you've been reading, so I don't want to start debating custom actions vs. factory, advantages of each, etc. It's all been hashed-out here in the past. Only you can select what satisfies you, and even that may take several false starts and failed attempts to achieve.
Work out your "interim" build to hold you over using on-hand components and a new barrel, to save money but accomplish the goal of an accurate new "custom", or throw those parts up there for sale, to help fund the new '08. Maybe your wife will let you fondle her new Swift when it arrives. While your 7-08 fund builds, work out the details in your head. Maybe watch the Group Buy forum and pick-up some pieces over time, so it doesn't hurt so much at once. Take your time and mull over the options and opinions.
It's your rifle, so you need to figure out what you want. That will be the one you should have built.
Good luck, and have fun!

Re: Need opinion / help with decision on build.

The problem is not the length but the diameter of the case. The geometry of WSM cases in a Rem 700 with the standard feed rails stretch the limits of what works in that size action. If you go to DM system you're good to go with a center feed box.

Re: Need opinion / help with decision on build.

Scott, thanks for the reply. The gun from UGSW will be the first build on a custom action. As for the cookie jar, that is what I do, I save my change. We usually spend it on vacations, but my wife has been busy, and I have been covered up the last couple of years, so the vacation fund paid for the swift.
I might just sell things and get another full "custom" build. See why i think I need help!
I also don't want to start a rock throwing contest between "Factory vs Custom" actions, but I have a 260 built by GAP that I found in a gunshop in a nearby town built on a 700 action and it would take something pretty good to be better.

Thanks Dave, my buddy's rifle has a DM and he has no trouble.
