Need some help finding a small shank, short action Savage or Stenens...

That should not be too hard, any seller of used guns or pawn shops should have a Savage/Stevens rifle that can be used as a donor. So long as you stay in the .308 family it will be small shank.

I don't know about the rest of the nation, but short action Savage/Stevens with the 308 sized bolt head are rare as hens teeth around here. Plenty of long actions, but there seems to be a high demand for the S/A's. The bolt face isn't that hard to swap around, but even then, I don't see too many 223 Savages either. When I do see one, it's within a $50 bill of a brand new rifle.
