Im going to have about 4k in jan, and am looking to get a precision rifle in .308. Now i know i can spend a good bit of money it seems on just the base rifle. but i wouldnt be able to get a scope or any ammo with buying something like a GAP. I can get dealer pricing on the savages and remingtons, and was wondering what i should do. I had priced out a savage 10FP Mcmillian before, but dunno how well they shoot. I can also get the Tikka T3's at a good price, but they dont have the aftermarket stock ability that the rem/savage does, because i hear the t3 tactical stocks are a bit light. Also, how do the tacticals shoot. how well do the TRG-22's shoot because i was also considering a TRG-22, although i cant get dealer price on it, i can still get a pretty good deal from a dealer friend of mine..but i wont be able to get a scope or case of ammo if i get the TRG. Should i not worry about accessories and just get a good rifle off the bat, or should i buy a complete setup and ammo to practice?

Can someone help me out here?

Re: Need some help.

What ever rifle you get, make sure you get good glass...

the gun barrel and stock can be easy to upgrade.

Glass you can't really upgrade with out getting rid of one for another.
I vote Nightforce at a minimum, you wont regret it.

Rifle vote goes for remington 700.

Re: Need some help.

I think it would drive me crazy to have such a fine GAP custom, and not be able to shoot because I'm saving for a scope. Not saying you shouldn't go that route though, because you can't even begin to compare the quality of a factory rifle with a GAP.

I started out with a savage and its a great shooter. Before i started reloading, it shot under .8 moa with hornady light mag ammo. I now have 2 different handloads that shoot a maximum of .5 moa. All of my savages have been good shooters, however if you think you will use the action out of the rifle your buying now to build a custom in the future, go with a Remington 700.

Can't comment on the t3 tacticals or TRGs. Never seen one in action.
