Need to rant...

I've seen some members (posters) try and sell items at fuck you prices on this site. I generally agree with those who are ripping their asses apart for doing so.

Before becoming a member and daily reader of these forums, I was a regular on a less reputable site. My first few posts on here were received with harsh response and I learned to accept it (kinda like basic training).

Despite the current market and all the gouging going on, I knew this wasn't the place to try and profit from the madness (nor would I want to take advantage of Hide members). I have made a few sales here and have been happy to give great deals, knowing my equipment would find a good home.

With that said, I have no problem taking advantage of the situation at the "other" site.

The "Hide" is a different group with different expectations from its members. It's times like these that I appreciate you all more than ever. I had trouble articulating this post, please read between the lines.

Bottom line to gougers, sell your shit somewhere else..

Re: Need to rant...

Are you listing the items for sale here? (At pre Sandyhook prices?) If you are not and only listing them elsewhere at inflated prices, then the effect on Hide members who want (need?)these items is exactly the same. The items are still unavailable at what they consider to be reasonable prices. Making the items unavailable here simply because you don't want people here to think that you are a dick is certainly less than altruistic. If you want to prove your point, post the items here, at pre Sandyhook prices and sell only to pre Sandyhook members. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Having said that, this is not food, water fuel or shelter. The market will dictate whether these guys have priced their property appropriately.

Re: Need to rant...

Supply and demand, and free markets...are a M'fer.

That said, I'm selling an extra AR and my AK to a friend who has none at the price I paid for them about a decade ago because, well...he's my friend.

Flynn, I understand your feeling and I personally have benefited from the camaraderie amongst members with more than fair prices on some stuff sold here. I want to see that continue also. While I haven't posted anything to sell here (yet anyway) I would put a reasonable price tag on the item(s). But, to each his own.

Nothing states anybody has to pay them the price they're posting it for. For that matter, nothing says we (the collective we) can't call them out for being opportunist dicks if we choose to.

Re: Need to rant...

Flynn,
Totally agree with you.
Though I respect leagle's opinion, I think he's wrong.
The actual chance of something you sell today at a reasonable price landing in the hands of someone in true need of it are nill.
If you list a stripped lower, upper, p-mags for what you paid for it right now, it wouldn't last 5 minutes. Someone who didn't need it would buy to hoard, resell, or whatever.
Heck, I don't need mags, but if someone lists some at cost, I'll take em, just like 60% of the members on here.
LowLight asked members not to gouge, if you can make quick buck on something, sell it elsewhere. I can't see where that makes you part of the problem.

Re: Need to rant...

A buddy of mine offered to buy a dpms off of me for $2000. I flat out told him it wasn't worth that much. I could not in my right mind do that to him or anyone else. What we did was compromise. He had a savage 338 win mag that he was wanting to get rid of so I swapped him straight up. I felt better doing that than ripping him off. In the end we both got a fair deal.

Re: Need to rant...

There's a (somewhat) free market in this country, and many people are inclined to point that out as they try to turn huge profits on hot-ticket items. But, I think the thing that makes this site different is that people regard this site as more of a community than an internet marketplace. So, rip-off prices are taken a bit personally by other members of the site, since they feel like it is analogous to ripping off your friends/family.

If I knew I could sell my POS commuter car (that I bought for $600 from my ex-wife) to someone for $10,000 because they REALLY wanted it, I'd probably sell it to them in a heart beat, with a huge smile on my face. If that's what the market conditions allowed, I'd probably be okay with selling it for more than I felt it was worth. But, I sure wouldn't let a friend pay me $10K for a $600 car. I actually had a colleague offer me far more than I'd paid for the car, while he was shopping for a vehicle for his daughter. I could have turned a tidy profit on that deal, but didn't feel right taking him to the cleaners on it, even though he knew what I paid for it in the first place. And, at the price I thought it was worth, it was still worth it to me to keep the car and use it for commuting.

I guess that's how I feel about the magazine price issue: if I had extra magazines available that I was willing to get rid of, I'd sell them to friends for what I'd paid for them. If I was going to list them online to strangers, I'd charge market value for them. The 'Hide is kind of in between. I probably know more than a dozen members on here in real life, and through these people probably have just one degree of separation from hundreds of members. I don't feel inclined to turn a profit on you guys (though I have nothing to sell anyway).
