I have been loading Reloader-15 for quite sometime with good results. I have 8# of Varget I'd like to use. Anyone with any chrono info, load recommendations for my specific setup with Sierra 175's? I have found that faster isn't always as accurate. What do you have?

Rem 700 .308 26" barrel with 1.10 twist

Thank you.

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

42.0 - 44.0 gr w/ Fed 210m, Win Brass, OCL 2.800"

44.0 gr Varget w/175 SMK gives 2,710 fps out of .308 Blaser LSR 2 at 5,150 ft above sea level.

43.5 gr shoots 1/2 MOA or better in all of my .308's.

Note: 44.0 gr of Varget is on the "warm side" using sierra 175's and should be approached cautiously. This load shoots exactly .5 MOA higher than Black Hills 175 gr Match at 600 yards.

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

45.0 Varget pushing a 175smk in a prep'ed Win case, lite with a BR-2, OAL 2.800, gets to 1K in 37.0 IPHY at 90*F 660ASL from a 22" 12 twist Pac-Nor.

Unless it has a base fuse, speed means nothing to me.

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

I agree with the guys that have already replied.43-45 grains works good just work up to the 45 grains and you should end up with a load that will give you good results.but 44g of varget and Br2's with a 175g smk at 2.800 shoots the best for me with my 5R.

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

I am running 45 grains of Varget in a prepped WIN case under a 175 gr SMK. 2.800 OAL. Shoots like a hammer when I do my part.

This load is working well in 3 rifles that I know of right now. It is a little on the warmer side so work up to it from say...
43-44 grains and you will find an accurate load.

Chrono if you need it to go 1000yds.

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

Some long-range accurate loads using Varget are:

* Lapua brass
* 175SMK
* 44 to 45 grains of Varget (you need to find the best load for your rifle)
* CCI BR2 primer (I've consistently found Fed 210/210Ms not as accurate with Varget)
* 2.810" COAL

If you have a Remington factory rifle, like a PSS, they are notably slower than a good 5R barrel, for example. A 24" 5R barrel will yield 2,600 to 2,725 fps or so with the above load.

There are slower, accuracy loads that use less Varget, and you will have to explore them with your rifle. Check 6mmBR.com and look under the 308Win section for loads that have been well tested by competitive shooters.

Finally, the above load assumes a 0.010" to 0.030" bullet jump to the lands. If your rifle has a very long leade (throat), then you may have to seat the bullet longer and vary the amount of Varget. This can be a problem with factory Remingtons and some people set them back a couple threads to get a proper jump distance.

There is no simple answer, you will have to get to work with these basic parameters.

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

45.7 gr Varget
175 SMK
Win Brass
CCI LR
out of 22inch Gap Rock.

No Chrono data.

My advice would be to start at 43 gr and work up in .3 increments to 46 or until you hit pressure. Then tweek in .1 when you find the sweet spot. But I'm a beginner myself so take with a grain of salt.

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

What brass are you looking to use as it will make a large difference. Here is my load for a savage 10 le,

Lapua brass with uniformed and deburred primer pockets
Fed. 210M primers
175 SMK
43.5 gr. Varget
2.835" +,- .002" (.015" jump in my rifle)

2745 fps

If I go much above 44 grains, I get the shiny circles on the case head where the brass started to flow into the ejector hole on the bolt face.

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

Here are my favorites with Varget for a 26" Remmy 700 PSS.

Virgin Lapua brass, BR-2, 44.1 gr Varget, 175 SMK = 2640 fps
Prepped Win brass, BR-2, 45.0 gr Varget, 175 SMK = 2630 fps

Both loads are seated with a comparator to a COL of about 2.830" and are accurate at 1,000 yds.in the 26" PSS, which has a match cut chamber in its factory barrel. They hold around 1/2" at 100 yds.

The most accurate load for this stick is 46.0 gr Varget with 168 SMKs and BR-2s in prepped Win brass. I've gotten several 5 round groups in the mid-threes with that load and it consistently groups under 1/2" at 100 yds. Chrony says velocity is around 2,710 fps, plus or minus, on a warm day. YMMV

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

168 Grain SMK
Lake City Prepped Brass
CCI # 34 primers
45.0 Grains Varget
COAL 2.810
2500 Ft above sea level
60* weather
10 twist Kreiger on a remmy action
2729 10 shot average

Shot today and had several sub .300 groups at 100. Worked really well at 200 and 300.

Please start low and work up.....

Re: Need Varget Data for .308

I just tried two Varget loads at 1000 yds - both 45.0. Both shot extremely well out of two rifles. Here they are:

175 smk
45.0 varget
lapua brass
Fed 210 primers
2.820 COAL
this load was shooting under 1/2 moa at 1k in two differernt rifles.

178 AMAX
45.0 varget
Lapua
Fed 210
2.860 COAL
under 3/4 moa at 1000 and shot a .364" 5-shot group at 100 yds in a SPS Tac three days ago.

Neither are chrono'd yet, but soon
