Your moms house
I am taking a hard look at one of these for my SA Savage and would love to see some range reports before I "pull the trigger" (pun intended).

Let's see some groups...

Re: Need XLR Evolution range report

I just got mine for my Rem 700 XCR LRT in 300wm. I should make my first trip out with it tomorrow. So far I can tell you I am very happy with it. The fit and finish is excellent and the customer service I received from Kyle was top notch. I originally wanted something like a Manners T5 or AICS and has reservations about going with an AR style setup, but features, availability and bang for the buck won and I went with the XLR. My current setup is a bit funky and cobbled together, but I'm working on it. I'm running a cheapo simmons while I save for a quality optic. I have an ACE push button folder with an Enidine "Shock Stock" tube I borrowed from my 870. I'm waiting to get my Badger FTE brake machined so I'm experimenting with the Enidine tube in the meantime. I have a Magpul MOE stock with a 3/4" cheek riser and a universal Limbsaver "grind to fit" pad. If I like how the Enidine works I'll get the stock and riser sorted out better. I can tell you that the Enidine works great for absorbing recoil with 00 buck and magnum slugs on my 12ga, but I'm wondering how the travel will affect accuracy in this application and if there is a good reason we don't see setups like this more often (please chime in and school me here guys).

It is definitely a work in progress.
Current weight is 12.2 lbs Unloaded.
Planning a Viper PST and probably an Atlas bipod. Also considering the XLR butt/cheek riser setup that the stock is typically ordered with, and possibly adapting it to the Enidine.

Training Wheels,

I have pictures of groups shot with my rifle, but I can't post pics (problems with photobucket
mad.gif
). I can email them to you if it would help. First target is 5, 5 shot groups @ 100 yards. They measure .348, .340, .536, .237, & .279. Target average is .348. Second target is 300 yard groups, again 5, 5 shot groups. Average of all groups is .377 MOA. Lastly is a 1000 yard 6 shot group and it measures 6.205". Like I said, let me know if you want me to email them to you.

Stocks alone don't make small groups. But enough time behind quality equipment will, and the XLR stocks are as quality as it gets. If you are located anywhere near me you are welcome to shoot my rifle (can't tell from your profile). I guarantee if you haven't ordered one by then you will after feeling it in person.

<span style="text-decoration: line-through">What rifle are you putting in it?</span> Looks like you are putting a Savage in it. Do a search using the function in my signature. There was a thread awhile back where I guy put his Savage in one and it looked sweet!

Here is my Savage 10FCP-K.

I absolutely echo everything JJ and Chris has said! Kyle @ XLR is simply phenomenal to work with! I too was going to go with a manners or the savage AICS if it ever makes it out, but I just couldn't pass the XLR up after seeing McClarrenRoss's build! I simply don't see how you could go wrong on one of these stocks! It feels perfect to me!!

I don't have groups yet as I am still doing load development but for grins here is my 300 yard 1st round ladder test of Varget and 175 SMK's. Not really sure what was going on in some of the jumping around, but the 100yd ladder showed about the same results. Needless to say 7,8,9 is where I am starting for round 2!

Words to live by, shooter, stock, scope, trigger, ammo etc. are all links in a chain and it sounds like the XLR is not a weak link. Thanks for the offer and if I am in your area I will take you up on it.

Re: Need XLR Evolution range report

Ordered it last Monday, Kyle said only a 2 week build time with a 16" tube (which is as long as his anodizer can handle). With a DBM system and ATI strikeforce stock, it came out to ~$635. I feel bad for the people who have to wait 8+ months for a McMillan.

I don't care how good the rest of your rig is if the stock is crap you will not shoot groups like those. That is some impressive shooting.

Re: Need XLR Evolution range report

I took my XLR rifle to the range today to try out my R&D Precision rifles brake.
Here is the pertinent info:
Remington 700 XCR Long Range Tactical 26"
300wm, fusion 150gr
$50 simmons with VDC 500 yard turret
XLR chassis
Enidine "Shot Stock" Tube, magpul MOE stock, limbsaver grind to fit pad
R&D brake

Very still day,
Shot off of my backpack on the bench... no bipod or bags.
4 rounds at 570 yards (I previously was told it was 500, but there was a really nice guy there with a Bushnell ARC 1600 it was 575, so I played with them a bit and verified. I want those binocs!).
I took 4 shots, which was enough considering the range has been a swamp lately. There were a few knee deep spots and many huge blobs of mosquito larvae. 2 trips down was enough.

First shot, cold bore with aprox 12" holdover since my turret stops at 500 yards. Yes, I have tiny hands, which everyone knows means... I wear tiny gloves. Yeah yeah bad joke, back to my half ass range report.

Here is the best part. The rifle kicks like an ar15. You can feel the movement and a substantial push, but no "punch". My pre-64 model 94 30-30 has MUCH sharper and more uncomfortable recoil. This is more like an m1 carbine. I was concerned that my recoil management mods (especially the enidine) may affect consistency. Considering the ammo, "tactical" rest (standard backpack) and of course the shooter, I am very pleased and know there is room for improvement as well. Plus, I could shoot this thing all day VERY comfortably! I cant wait to get some 208 amax's loaded and see what happens, but since right now 575yds is my longest readily available range I need to stick with the cheapest stuff I can find and save my $ for a good optic.
But, if any of you experienced reloaders will sell me say 10-20 rounds of 208, pm me.
Back to the XLR...
Besides the features and price point I went with the XLR for 2 main reasons. The first was my plan to construct full length suppressor that extends back to the action (my uncle is a class 2 mfg, but I still need to get my stamp and havent started the project yet) and the XLR design is perfect for it. The second reason was to run the Enidine. So far things are going as well and the XLR is a beautifully made platform that has allowed me to do exactly what I planned. The rifle shot well with its OEM B&C aluminum bedded stock to begin with. I had very close to the same size group with 165gr fusion (within 1/4 in @575), but also shot that group quite heavily fortified with sand bags. I dont really have lots of hard data... judge for yourself.

Re: Need XLR Evolution range report

Well I got out yesterday with mine, only at 100yds though. I ended up being quite humbled! lol I have to say this isn't very indicative of the stock as Caveman's groups above clearly show what is capable with a good rig and a GREAT shooter! I on the other hand am NOT a great shooter! And my groups prove it! But none-the-less here they are. Sorry for the huge pic and for some reason I can't get OnTarget to make the text any bigger! The best one calculates to CTC at .622" which is the last group and seems like I was getting into a groove, then run out of ammo!

Re: Need XLR Evolution range report

Big, just keep at it mate, you will find the groove and stay in it with constant practice.

Is your node at #7,8 and 9 45grains with the 175's?

The vertical dispersion in your 6th target looks like it was on the money... would have been ace if that flyer wasnt in there, but still awesome regardless.

Keep it up

Re: Need XLR Evolution range report

First off, great looking rifles & groups guys. I'm very interested in this system as it allows for using the savage platform and performing work on the rifle at home.

One question that I have though is in regards to the fore-end tube and clearnace with the scopes objective bell. Approximately how much additional clearance is needed for a given rifle/scope combination. If a non-tube stock/chassis was used and requires mid-height scope rings, would the XLR chassis require high, extra high????
I appreciate any and all help. Hopefully I'll be posting my own pics of a XLR chassis on my proposed savage build sometime next spring.

thanks

Re: Need XLR Evolution range report

vman, yup your on it! On the ladder test I posted 7, 8, 9 are at 44.5, 45, 45.5 grains of Varget with the 175smk's!

Since I haven't been able to shoot my next rounds of load workup's yet I decided for my range trip on saturday to just load in the middle of the node. So all of the groups in the pic I posted last night are loaded up at 45gr even.

Thanks for the encouraging words! I am still new to this kind of shooting, and this was just my second trip out with the XLR Chassis, and only the 3rd trip out with the rifle all together! It's a lot of fun though!!

Jeo556, This is hard to answer as of course their are lots of variables to consider as far as base height, ring height, scope size, etc etc! The overall answer though will be yes you will need taller rings unless you already have a good amount of clearance between barrel and objective bell. How much taller you will need will be based on your setup.

In my pic of the rifle up above you can see that I actually had to use a riser rail for an AR to give me the clearance I needed. That scope was a 56mm objective, with the factory stock I had just over 1/8" of clearance with Burris Signature Zee Medium height rings. To be able to use the same rings I had to use the riser that adds probably just under a half inch I'm guessing. This won't be my final configuration, and thats why I decided to use the riser. That is a temp scope and temp rings at this point. In fact that perticular scope is gone and was replaced with another temp scope which will be moved along with the rings to another rifle once my Vortex PST arrives. I will order the proper rings when it gets here as I will need exact measurements to figure it out. I am guessing Badger Extra Tall is what I will need in the end.

**ETA**

I updated my group pic for size and added some readable text for group sizes. Nothing to brag about to say the least, but I'm here to learn! Should get better with practice!
