New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

Great rifle and welcome aboard. There is a lot of great information here that you can take advantage of. Feel free to make yourself at home.

However, a bit of advice, we're not really into "groups", so if you don't make shooting "groups" your emphasis, you'll do great.

Im for the later...on a budget though. Im sure you can tell by the choice of rifle and scope though.

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

Did you handload for the ones up top? If you don't have a chronograph I'd take a grain off of the varget, 46gr is max and max doesn't usually yield the best accuracy. Good shootin though, and the SPS tacticals are nice rifles.

Yeah those are handloads. So you think I should try 45gr? I was happy with 46. I was gonna stick with that and see if the accuracy improved once I changed the stock and bedded the action.

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

Good looking rifle with good looking groups. I'm sure those that spend thousands for a rifle are envious of you.

IMHO, if you are shooting under half an inch at 100, why screw with the load, looks pretty good for a stock rifle...

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

Welcome to the Hide. Thats some good looking groups you have there. Looks like that load and rifle combo is going to really work out for you.

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

BTW. Max accuracy load with my SPS is 44.8 grs Varget, Lapua Brass, 175 SMK, Fed 210m primers, .010 of the lands, Yields me a little over 2600 fps with low ES.

Welcome to the Hide.

Get ready to chase the dragon my friend for LR shooting is like heroin, you can't get enough!

I have a similar group with 46gr of varget, but shooting 155gr scenars

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

Sounds like a plan. Wont hurt anything to give it a try. Ive read plenty of guys running 175 through the same rifle you have and had nothing but good results. I run a clone of 118LR through mine with 43.5 GR of RL15 and get sub MOA results.

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

Congrats on the rifle. I started out with an SPS Tactical and got similar results. I'm using a Nightforce 5.5-22X, so I had a bit more magnification to work with. I've had many days with that rifle where I didn't shoot a single group over .5" CTC.

The only downside to the stock Remington is that it has a really long throat, but it seems that you found to cure to that. The SMKs really don't mind jumping. What was driving me nuts was having to juice the heck out of my ammo to get any kind of velocity out of the barrel. I don't know enough about barrels to say why the velocity was so low.

In any case, mine really liked the 168 and 155 SMKs. Try some Reloader 15. I actually got higher velocities with it, than with Varget, and lower standard deviations and extreme spreads.

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

RL-15 yields a little better velocity but I can't get the ES and SD where I can with Varget.

Also, RL15 appears to be more temp sensitive.

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

Run away. Set your rifle down, burn your credit cards, and for the LOVE OF GOD DON'T TELL YOUR WIFE ABOUT THAT PURCHASE OF A NIGHTFORCE SCOPE!!

Welcome, enjoy.

It is a sickness, but there are many sicknesses that are worse for you than this sport.

Re: New 308 Shooter (Gun and Groups)

Nice setup, and good shooting. I'm pretty much in the same place you are (just getting into the sport with a very similar setup) except I don't have a wife to save my wallet. I have high hopes and now expectations for my little SPS tactical.

I've shot some 155, and 178 grain AMAXs through mine with excellent results. Mine has shown a preference for loads pretty close to max.
