Looking to buy new 5R at local shop for 1055.00. They have two cal. .300 and .223 (no .308). I have a rem 700BDL 7mm for hunting. Need some input on what cal. to buy, this gun will be a range gun.

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

get the .223 and and shoot it ,and after a bit get a new barrel in 308

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

I would go with the 300, correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the 223 have a bad twist rate?

x2, if you can't just wait to buy a .308 5R

Sounds like you have no real use for the .300 since you've already got the 7mag

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

.223. You should be able to run the 75gr A-Max/VLD with the 1:9 twist rate. Therefore, you should be able to hit 1K with stout enough reloads.

Reloading components are cheaper and powder consumption is far less. There is also less recoil.

Keep in mind that a switch from .223 to .308 is more than just a rebarrel, not a lot more though.

I think you forgot something, the 223 uses a different bolt face then the 308. Thus swapping over to that caliber from the 223 is a bit more involved then just swapping a barrel.

As for the original question. I will be the odd ball. Go with the 300. One can never have to many magnums. At least that is how I feel about it but I'm strange like that.

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

i love my magnums too, but i regret not getting a good .223 sooner. they are great fun and lots cheaper to run.

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

You guys know for sure that the .308 will be offered again? Release date? I would love to have another .308 in the 5R. The .223 would be better, IMHO, if it was 1-8" twist.

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

If your counting votes, put me down for the 223. I shoot mine alot more because of the minimal recoil. Now that everything is getting so expensive, I am reloading for it more too because it is less money to shoot.

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

Thanks for all the info, I think I will try to find .308, if unable I may sale my 7mag and get the 300 in 5r. I would like to have .223 but I think I will try to get one later in 700sps tac to save money.
Thanks Bobby

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

Try to find a Rem. 700 Sendero in 300win. 1\2 the price of a 5R and I'll bet it will shoot just as well. Very pleased with mine.

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

If you are referring to the new Sendero SF II rifles, they generally go for the same, if not a few dollars more on the street than the 5R.

They usually are pretty good shooters though.

+1......and you can always open up the bolt face to 308 if you want to rebarrel some day. 223 is a great cartridge.

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

i just got a 5r in 308, so far i love it, I wsant crazy about the HS stock so I put a Bell and carlson medalist on it...which by the way in you need an HS stock let me know

I also just got a savage 10FP in 308 to run against the 5r and see shich I like best. the 223 wouls be alot of fun to shoot as mentioned before for powder consumption and recoil, but the 300 has a certain authority to it when it blst off and thats invigorating in its own right.

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

I say .308 or .300...........those Rock-like barrels were designed specifically for .308 diameter bullets and both will be tack drivers.......a local shope here, NE GA has 2 on the shelf in .308 for $1019.......if i could sell 1 of 2 700's i have for sale i'd own one......if you want their contact info feel free to send me an PM, i'm sure they'll ship to FFL

Re: new 5r .300 or .223

I recently picked up a 5r on gb.com a company called Krons Korners they had a few .308s in stock a few months ago. Nice folks to deal with in SD. Think the price was 957 -974 .
