After reading and re-reading the "Bedding Project" thread and various other threads and articles on the ole interweb, I'm finally starting my first bedding project. The rifle is a Stevens/Savage action that started life as a .243. It's now chambered in .260 with a McGowen barrel a bedded EGW scope base and a Manners T2 stock. The stock arrived pretty well inleted with only a couple of small areas that needed to be massaged. So far I've only gone through the fitting to make sure it all goes smooth when I'm ready to bed. I got really into it tonight and wanted to start waxing, play dohing, and mixing the Marine Tex but it's already 9 pm and I gotta work tomorrow. I'm going to post some pics of what I've gotten so far and when I get to it I'll post pics of the bedding.

Massaged the sides just a hair

A little more around the rear of the barrel nut

Action/guide screws taped enough to keep bedding out of pillars and to keep screws centered in pillars

Two layers of tape on the tang to keep it free floated after bedding, and tape on the barrel near the front of the stock to keep centered and level.

Nice and level

Nice gap for bedding

Relieved a little on the rear of the lug area to get a nice pad of bedding

Almost ready

Still have to tape off recoil lug and barrel nut but otherwise I'll be ready to put the play doh and kiwi on. More to come

Re: New bedding project

Brownells spray on release really rocks. Can't go wrong with that. Also, instead of taping the barrel nut I usually clay the slots and bed it as part of the barrel support pad, works really well. Good luck with your project

I've seen some Savage bedding jobs that clay the grooves of the barrel nut. Looking at it again the grooved area of the barrel nut is bigger around than the barrel so it would be truly floated. I'll give it a shot. Thanks

Re: New bedding project

Got the bedding done this weekend, overall I think it went well and was actually pretty easy thanks to all the good info here on the hide.

Now I'm nervous..

Couple of very shallow chips in front of recoil lug

The rear action screw area was a bit of a challenge, used play doh to shape the area of bedding

The line is a scratch not a crack

All put together, can't wait to shoot it this weekend

On Savage rifles the rear action screw is in front of the trigger. If the tang was bedded and there was a high spot back there when the action screws are tightened stress could be placed on the action. From my understanding many people do it both ways (float the tang and bed the tang) with good results. I personally float the tang because I don't want to run the risk of inducing stress in the action.
