I just bought a Badger base and am looking into buying Badger rings and a good optic. I don't want to blow the bank, but I do want something that will not be the reason I am not accurate. I want that to be me. What do you guys suggest in ring size, height, and an optic?

I realize alot of people are down on Leupold, but they still are good for the price range. For less than $1000.00 I would think Leupold 6.5x 20 LR with target knobs vs. M1. I think the detents feel better in the target turret.

I own 2 Nightforce NXS and a Leupold Mark 4. The NF is a great scope. You also have to consider reticle choices. The 2 NFs I own have an NP-R1 reticle which is an MOA based ranging system which is much easier to calculate than the mil-dot, IMHO. If you are used to the mil dot system and understand it then go Leupold TMR or MilDot. Either brand is great. A big pro for the Leupold, though, is that the whole eyepiece does not move when adjusting the magnification. It is a pain on my NF because i have to take off the eyepiece cover to cycle my bolt gun.

Viper PST, Bushnell FFP tactical, Weaver Tactical, of the three, only the Weaver is available right now.

Also consider Falcon 5.5-25, Nikon Monarch and Sightron SIII.

Alex,

Horse before cart. Pick your optic first, then pick the rings that will fit it on your rifle.

As far a suggesting an optic, why don't you suggest what you would like to use the rifle for first? Like: hunting, or tactical comps, or F Class, or benchrest, or just target shooting. Also how far are you planning to shoot?

And what's your budget? $500, $1000, $1500. some other amount?

Would you like a scope with:

Turrets?
MIL/MIL, or MOA/MOA or MIL/MOA reticles and knobs?
Do you favor, MILS, or 1/8",1/4" , 1/2", or 1" adjustments
Or maybe just a BDC?
Parallax Adjustment?
Illumination?
Can Opener?

Are you lasing your targets, or will you be using your reticle? Do you use wind and elevation hold-offs, hold-overs. hold-unders, or do you want to dial?

It's ok not to know any of those things. Read this:

Re: New Build Optic - 700P .308

Depending on the range you want to take it to....I would go with the Super Sniper 3-9 variable....MIL/MIL....Mildot....but 1k yards would be the limit for range I would think....that scope will end up on my 18" 7-08 more than likely.

I'm wanting to go to 1k range. That's about the max.

IMO I would go with that SS variable...for $600 it can't really be beat. You can always have more magnification but if you want quality glass and high magnification you are going to pay heavily. Just the way it is.

But I would deffinatly go MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA and you will always have a use for that scope, you won't need to upgrade, you might want to but won't need to. Leupold still has not figured out how to make MIL/MIL in any of their lower/mid range scopes, nor has anybody else that is mainstream big name.
