Thinking about doing my first build.
Nothing special but any thoughts or suggestions or buddy your stupid would be appreciated

Remington 700 sps 308 varmint
Drop it into a mcmillan A-4 (bed myself)
Switch out bottom to a detachable mag(any suggestions)
Possibly switch barrel to er shaw 6.5-284 or 260

Not looking to go for gold on the first one just trying to get a good rifle and a feel for doing it. This will be used primarily for steel shooting to 800yds and some whitetail hunting.

Don't bother with the varmint then. Since you plan on a rebarrel, get the cheapes ADL model with a .473 bolt face and send it off for barrel installation. An ADL model can be had for around 375, an SPS varmint will cost you about 550. That price difference alone will pay for the new barrel and part of the install cost.

.260 is the way to go, unless you want to rebarrel every year.

Not a lot of love for ER Shaw for most serious shooters, but I am absolutely certain that their barrels will be superior to most factory tubes.

Their price is excellent for truing an action and installing a barrel.

Check CDI for DBM, Jeff is excellent to deal with, his DBM is about 210 bucks and he will inlet your stock for about 60.
