New Comer- Help With Questions/Issues Please

Hello all,

New-comer to the forum here, and as far as long-distance shooting goes I've only ever shot at to 500 yards (with my Garand) so I am new to the realm of long-distance shooting.

Unless folks can give me some good reasons why not to, I'm pretty much sold on the idea of buying a Savage 10FP (in .308 winchester) in the next 3-7 weeks.

What I have a lot of questions on, what I need the most help on, will be scope selection, bipod selection, etc.

I was thinking of the Leupold Mark IV 3.5-10x40mm, I'd like it to have an illuminated mil-dot reticle. Does that sort of scope have an illuminated mil-dot reticle as an option? If there are no benefits to a mil-dot reticle and a tactical reticle is sufficient, then please make the case or point me to where the case is made in regards to mil-dot vs tactical. I'm still not entirely clear on the differences other than dots vs hashs.

I'm kind of on a budget (presently earning two engineering degrees so money isn't as readily available as it could be), I don't want to break the bank on anything, I'd like to keep it under $2,000 dollars for the rifle, scope, bipod, and sling. At some point in the next 8-10 months I might have the money to get a better stock for the rifle (from what I've read the main gripe with the Savage 10FP is the default/factory stock).

So basically what I'm hoping for, anybody who wants to weigh in on the Leupold scopes (or point me in another direction if there's a better option for the money), make some bipod suggestions, etc.

Basically what I want the rifle for is because I'd like to get into shooting at 500-800 yards mostly just for fun, maybe at some point for competition, and there's always the possibility of long-range hunting. Also somewhere in the back of my mind is the possibility that at some point, in the absence of civilized society with law and order, I may have a need for something that handles hostile/violent individuals at long-range.

For right now my objectives are to just get the rifle, get some quality scope that I can be happy keeping for the next 10-20 years, get a nice bipod, decent sling, and then hit up some classes (been looking at Badlands in Oklahoma and Storm Mountain in WV, like what I've found/read so far), and then just have fun shooting and learning.

Many thanks!

Re: New Comer- Help With Questions/Issues Please

Buy a name brand bi pod like Harris. I bought a knock off Harris and it's a POS. Now I have a real Harris so I wound up wasting money trying to save money.

I was looking at a Harris adjustable bipod, I believe it was 6-9 adjustable, for about 100 dollars, would that be a good choice to go with?

Well not to knock what you're saying, but if you cannot cite some specific issues I'm going to have to discount what you're saying because as they say "a supposition puts nothing into being."

Is there something demonstrably wrong with Savage? If so, speak and I'll listen. In the half-dozen or so sites/forums I've searched, and the several dozen threads I've read, the only issues I've found that folks have with the Savage 10FP is that the factory stock is a write-off. If you have some insight into some other aspect of the 10FP then please tell me, I'd like to hear about it now before I spend the money as opposed to after I spend the money.

Humored that you are under the illusion that spending the least on a POS Salvage, somehow correlates to non-lineal satisfactions due to inherent viability of the platform, ala dynamic cost savings by Bean Counters,to dupe the most mindless of the minions.

Groovin' on your asking the question, receiving intel beyond your ability to comprehend in it's accuracy, yet default to your cluelessness as a Swan Swong.

Bless your heart!</div></div>

Are you insane?

If somebody told you "don't buy that truck" but then refused to elaborate and state some reasons as to why you should avoid buying such a vehicle.

Maybe you can back out of this thread and leave it open for people who are willing and able to provide some details.

Thanks for trying!

Back-Off Dude. You're making a fool of yourself and the OPs questions are valid. If you can't explain your position, you should shut up.

Re: New Comer- Help With Questions/Issues Please

Savage's are pretty good for the money. Yes, they're a budget rifle, however they spend the money where it matters, ie: Barrel, Action and Trigger. Yes, the bolt can feel a bit sloppy and tough, but it is ACCURATE, and that is what matters. Yes, the stock is average at best, but again, it is accurate.

I don't know who this Clone guy is but it sounds like he's got nothing to back up his claims. If you want my 0.02c, every sav i've seen on the range would shoot MOA groups. The only time i ever saw one do worse was when it was using cheap as shit Highlander ammo. Using match ammo it'll blast around or under the MOA mark all day long if your scope and trigger finger do their part.

If you're on a budget, i'd look past the Leupold scopes and go for a Vortex Viper PST. Everyone is going crazy for them because they're brilliant and cheap. The only reason i don't have them is because they weren't available down under at the time.

Also, remember that the Rings and Mounts are just as important. EGW makes a great base, and some decent rings if you're on a budget.

Would a Remington 700 SPS be a better choice than the Savage 10FP? I had been considering a Remington 700 SPS but for every 2-3 good reviews there seems to be one or two bad reviews that suggest Remington QC, especially on their 700s, leaves much to be desired and is basically hit/miss, with the action being sandy instead of crisp.

I'm still not convinced on ruling out the Remington 700 entirely, but I've read enough that I'm worried about what might go wrong with in regards to poor QC.

Re: New Comer- Help With Questions/Issues Please

There is nothing wrong with a savage for recreational shooting. Are they a $3000 custom gun, no. But they are very accurate out of the box, factory rifles.

I own a Savage 10PC and a Remington SPS Tactical. They both have pros and cons.

Sugar Tits,

Humored that you ran away like a little bitch from all things germane to the rifle, yet can still whine exceptionally.

Congratulations? </div></div>
Sugar Tits? I gotta tell ya, that nailed me squarely in the funny-bone! LMFAO!

Re: New Comer- Help With Questions/Issues Please

Ok... Ok... I've found Savage rifles to be just as accurate as most mass-produced Factory rifles. No better, no worse. But they are generally less expensive. I'm just not fond of the trigger or the overall look of Savage rifles. I know guys that love them and that's fine with me. I simply prefer Remington and Winchester.

feel free to elaborate or are we just making claims without backup?

If a fellow was considering a Winchester which models would deserve consideration?
