Hey guys

I've been lurking around the site for about a month doing some intense research on my bolt gun build up. I have to say.. You guys have to be the most knowledgeable and helpful group of individuals I have ever seen on an internet message board.

Well.. to the point..

This is my first bolt gun build up but I do have quite a bit of experience shooting. This is my break for the 1000m mark. I don't quite have the skills for that range yet but that's the point of this rifle. It's gotta be something I can grow into and quickly.

After browsing around these boards and quite a few other I have put together two rifle set ups. I would love to get your guys' opinions on these and which one you would personally prefer and why.

I sold my DPMS LRT-SASS to fund this project so I hope I get it right the first time. I'm going to include the prices on the weapons themselves so you guys can hopefully tell me if I'm doing decent there as well.

FN SPR A1 .308 $1825
Harris Ultralight Bipod Series S Model L
Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44mm AO MC Rapid Z 1000 Reticle
Burris Rings (Taken off of the optics package I built for the SASS. Beefy bastards - Forget exactly what model they are though.)

As soon as I find a gunsmith I trust around Fort Hood I will be dropping it off for professional scope mounting, glass bedding and a trigger job (aiming for 1.5 pounds here).

Savage 10FCP LE2B .308 (McMillan Stock) SAV-01073 - $1284 at local dealer or $984 ordered at another with a 4-8 week wait time
Harris Ultralight Bipod Series S Model L
Weaver #47 Two Piece Bases
Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44mm AO MC Rapid Z 1000 Reticle

Optics to be professionally mounted by that competent gunsmith I haven't found yet.

What do you guys think of the Burris Full Field Tactical 30 4.5-14x40mm scope? I thought it was a decent scope when I had it mounted to the SASS. I'm not too sure about using it for the new rifle though. My old set up was the scope locked up in a Burris P.E.P.R. mount with a Burris Fast Fire mounted on top for close engagements.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me

Re: New Guy - New Build - First Long Range Bolt Gun

the zeiss will be much better than the burris.

A lot of guys here love the fn actions, but personally the savage/mcmillan setup is hard to beat for the price. If you go with the savage, pick up a 20moa one piece base (warne, seekins, tps, etc). You can pick up the 10fcp mcmillan off gunbroker for around $1050 new if you dont want to wait. And with the money saved, buy an atlas bipod or more ammo. Some like the accutrigger, but I suggest swapping it out with a rifle basix. You can install it yourself within 20-30 minutes.

Re: New Guy - New Build - First Long Range Bolt Gun

If you're going to buy a nicer scope I'd say go with a Nightforce or a Leupold MK4. You said you want to shoot out to 1k (guessing this is not for animals) a tactical turret will suit you a lot better then their rapid drop whatever. This scope will cost you more money, but the saying "buy once, cry once" will suit you better in the long run. Also if you're going to buy a nice scope even if it's the Conquest don't go with a cheap set of rings. Protect your scope with some good rings that are durable. Yes it will cost more, but in the longer run you will do better. I bought a Nightforce and I was told I a was crazy, but now that I have it I could never be happier. If the Conquest suits your fancy and that's what you want, don't let me bring you down just make sure it's your best choice.

For a rifle personally I am a Remington fan, but everyone who has a good shooter is a die hard fan of their choice.

That's my $0.02
