So I picked this up from the local Academy a few weeks ago. It's chambered in .308. It is going to be used for deer and hog hunting, along with some target shooting. I do not have access to a 1000 yard shooting range and I know that, left unchanged, the rifle is not perfect for that. I do want to try my luck at 300-500 yard shooting. I will be replacing the scope on it as soon as I am able to. I read all about people replacing barrels and what not. Is that something that I will want to do with this rifle? Or is the thin profile barrel accurate enough? What else do I need to know about this gun? I have shot it a few times so far and it seems to shoot fine. It is probably more accurate than I ever will be.

Shoot it! Very good action, and they tend to be rather accurate. The trigger is not wonderful from the factory ( heavy + creep), but can be adjusted or simply replaced with a Timney (very simple conversion and very crisp with adjustment). I wouldn't replace the barrel unless you can prove its not a shooter.

Congrats on your purchase...I agree with mike re the barrel. Spend your $ on the best scope you can afford as that is the biggest difference maker in terms of performance outside the shooter himself.
