New life for an old trainer service rifle barrel

So I brought out my service “trainer” rifle that I hadn’t done anything with the last 10 yrs amd was still able to print a respectable group at 100 yds. Wasn’t fun though, as my older eyes were working real hard to confirm a good sight picture.
I then made a decision and ordered up a flat top receiver, a 12” DD quad rail and even a low profile gas block just for looks and we’re gonna take that Douglas barrel off and SPR it up.

Should be a fun/badass .22 lr when done and am looking forward to seeing how well that Douglas barrel will do with a scope at 100 yds. So we’ll go from this

Looking good bud, just because it's not a bolt action doesn't mean it's not a shooter at 100. The finish is spot on and I'm looking forward to seeing how the new barrel does.

Okay, today was FUN! No one else on the range and no wind to top it off. I’ve always used Federal AutoMatch cause it’s always performed well in the past thru service rifle practice but wanted to know what it would do shooting it with a scope. I also had 1 box of Aquila Super Extra to compare.

What I came away with is the AutoMatch consistently clustered 8 and would throw 2 out at both 50 and 100 yds. The Super Extra did about the same except the “flyers” were “excessive”. Here’s 50 yds.

1.3 mils up and here’s a 10 rd group on the left at 100 yds to compare with the last group fired with this barrel as a service rifle (note those consistent 2 flyers).

And finally a fun target 100 yds

1st 10 rds were fired with the Aquila Super Extra

Then 10 with Federal AutoMatch

1 left 1 right flyer and 8 clustered center. This barrel shoots the Federal well.

Fun/Badass? Yep.
