So Panty 6 and I thought that getting rid of our old rotten deck might be a good idea for safety of the family. Well, you all know how that stuff goes. First she gets an idea, then the reasons come out, and you're getting sucked into a really big project. Then there are contractors, oh, but wait, we get to do the demo, then it's all said and done.

Next year, yeah, you kow it, I get my garage done!

Re: New place to party!

Going to look at some dark stains from Olympic and get some samples for a few 'sticks' we saved. The wood is 'Yellawood' and has a couple weeks to get rid of it's green tint from the Copper Bisulphate before we can stain it and clearcoat it.

@Lazy
Those rails are made to hold a drunken assclown from falling and have yet to be tested, but maybe we will see come the 21st of May when my EOD buddy gets back from the sandbox

Sweet party deck Switch! I did the deck on my old house that way with the roof not covering all of it and it makes it nice. Be sure to stain the underside. If you didn't stain or seal the planks before you laid them be sure to cover them well now.

Nice work...even for a anti woodpecker!

How far did you go Switch? New piers, beams and joists? Is the valley (Roof section, over the deck, that ties into the existing roof, for all you non builder types

)existing, or did you build that as well?

Good times will follow I am sure!

Re: New place to party!

q,
The design(us and Andrew) and construction were done by (Andrew)Sutton Construction of Clarksville. They came recommended by our financial advisor who also remodels houses as a side business(they do his work). We did the demo in about 2.5 hours all the way to the wall of the house.
The entire deck has been replaced. It sits on 6x6 poles on top of 3' deep concrete footings and metal feet. It uses 2 x 10 joists, and all headers are 2x12(x3) laminated. The roof ties into the main roof with a 30* pitch and all shingles have been woven into the existing roof.
The whole system is 'to code' so we can at a later date TBD, remodel and extend the kitchen. The new roof extends 12' over the 18' deck leaving a 6' open area for the grills and for Panty 6 to ('I don't BURN! I'm Hawaiian!')* tan.
The two 'porch lanterns' are tied into the existing flood light on the driveway side. The fan and recessed lights with CFL dimmers, are tied into the old porch light that was over the kitchen door. This makes it easy to grill at night when we have late dinners, or get a good fire started early in the morning when using the big smoker...which will see duty May 21st as it gets filled with Brisket, Pork Butt, a couple racks of ribs, and a chicken or two. My EOD buddy is cooling his heels in 'The Bag' as we speak, awaiting transport stateside.

2006 - Sandy Beach Hawaii...four hours later, lobster Hapa girl, who WHEN OFFERED upon arrival to have tanning lotion rubbed on her, stated the above

Looks good man, we just had our patio covered in a cedar pergola. I'm sitting under it right now getting the smoker fired up.

tan, that's an optical or camera based illusion. Every board on that structure is square and plumb to within 1/8". I was at home in between classes every day checking stuff with my 4' level and smiling at the guys. I let them know my Lather experiences, and told them if I wanted unsquare or out of plumb I would be happy to build it myself, but expected a much higher standard from a professional crew. They liked the fact I was checking their work, and took great pride in the finished job when they saw me walking it with a big smile. Me, IF I build something like this myself, that means I have the time, and money for top shelf wood with no minor impercetions.
If I had the dough for a top shelf bulder from out of state, QQ would be a good choice as well
