I own a savage 10fcp-k with 22" bbl and 1-10" twist in .308win. what would be a decent load for this? i received some info from friends but not sure how much they know about accurate reloading (mostly just hunters or small caliber reloaders). also, i have two different bullets in mind. one is a smk 175gr bthp, the other is smk 168gr bthp. what powder/primers might be best for those?

Re: New reloader to the game

There is a lot to take in when first starting out but my advice to you is buy a good reloading manual and read! Check out all the stickies in this section too, there is tons of good advice.
Buy the best equipment you can first time and stick with quality components. For example for bullets you've mentioned - Lapua brass, CCI 200 or BR primers and Varget would be a good starting point. Also its not just the components its how you put them all together (good press and dies).

Above all be cautious and stay safe. Have fun!

Re: New reloader to the game

I started on an RBCS Rock Chucker and I still use it (among others) 30+ years later. Most of us work our way through cheaper tools till we get to the good stuff. It takes a while to absorb all the knowledge required to consistently make the best ammo (and to understand how to utilize the best tools). I made some really good short-range ammo right off the bat, but it fell apart at longer distances because of all the little things I hadn't learned yet.

You can find individual items cheaper elsewhere, but SINCLAIR is one of the best sources for quality tools. If they carry it, it probably isn't junk.

The bullets you mention are two of the classics. HERE is a good article covering the component options for .308.

175 SMK over the 168 SMK. Its only a tad heavier and with take you further than the 168smk. In your travels you will come across some 168smk bashing. Thats due to some issues it has going past 800 yards, because of its design. Not a problem if your not going past 800. Otherwise the 175smk is a good all round bullet.

The RCBS gear should get you going and last you a whole lifetime.
