I have a XCR compact tactical in 308 comes with 20" fluted barrel and the 40x trigger which i like, it has factory jeweled bolt pretty smooth action, i have added a badger over size bolt and im having the barrel threaded for a badger FTE brake, i have a nightforce unimount with integrated rings and a nightforce nsx 3.5x15x50mm MD ZS scope, im about to take the plunge on a XLR tactical stock, my question is, are there any recommendations on the action as far as upgrades?, im new to the bolt guns have a ton of m14's, but im trying to build a light weight nail diver, is it worth getting the bolt fluted rather than the jewel? any advice would be appreciated thanks

fluting a bolt is purely cosmetic unless you shoot in freezing conditions so no worries there. the rest of the build sounds good to me nice choice on the XLR.

thanks so no real benifit to the fluted bolt huh? i do like the way they look though, any other little upgrades that people do on the rem 700 or is the xcr tactical good out of the box? as far as freezing unless there is a polar shift Arizona will be far from freezing its 110 degrees here right now

Guess it all depends on what you will do with your gun and what you expect out of it. It's not a bad shooter right out of the box. I mostly shoot steel and my range only goes out to 500 meters. Mine is completely box stock. The furthest I shot for groups was 300 meters. Shot 2 groups. 1) 3 shot group @ 1.5" and 1) 4 shot group 1.6". These were shot with Nosler 168gr Competition ammo. May not be a custom, but no slouch either.

My compact likes 165 SGK with RE-15. It groups 1/2" real easy right out of box, no break-in just plain shooting. Gonna experiment with heavies out to a 1000 yd. The little compact hangs in there with the nicer rifles at our range.

Thanks, sounds like i dont need to do much more, i just never owned a rifle that didnt require some needed upgrade so if its out the box ready im happy to leave it as is

That rifle is a beast that was my first partial build bedded the gun put a tac ops bolt knob and dropped in a hs m24 full adj stock
my sweet load for target 42.8gr varget 168smk and for hunting 42.8gr varget 165sgk sub moa. Damn wish I still had that rifle but it is what it is.Oh one more thing if i was going past 500yards 175smk 44.0gr varget work up to that load found some pressure signs on some cheaper brass i.e. remington I found winchester and of course if you have the money lapuia is the way to go. Just my opinion.
