new rifle ?? 1000 yards and subsonic w/ same gun

I am looking to build a new rifle and would like the option to get 1000 yards plus be able to screw on a can and shoot subsonic safely (obviously not at the same time). This rifle will be used as a practice/hunting (deer, hogs, coyotes....) rifle. Barrel life is relatively important but shouldn't really be an issue since I am also wanting to shoot subsonic. I will be reloading so standard cartridges aren't important.

I have a 700 SPS in .308 but the barrel is a 1 in 12 twist so it will have to be rebarreled to do well with subsonics. So since I am rebarreling what are the different loads I should look at. I thought about the whisper series loads but they just don't have enough energy to kill whitetail at distances.

So here is what I am currently looking at:
1. 308 just rebarrel to a 1 in 9 or 10" twist
2. 7-08 for the high BC of the .284s and barrel life
3 284 i like this round but I am not for sure if I can take it subsonic
4. 338 fed.

What are some others?

before you rebarrel the gun try some 168 or 180 gr bullets with some trailboss powder for subsonics. I have had very go0d luck with subsonic 168s through my 20" SPS Tactical.

A freind and I tried some 100gr bullets in a 243 with I beleive 8grs of trailboss. They were sbsonic andgrouped pretty well.
I think we ended up with 10grs of traiboss and 168gr bullets in a 30-06.

work up your own loads. I am at 6200ft and it was in the 30'swhen we were working loads up.

Lot of guys doing what you want with .308, mine is a 1 in 11 twist and my sub loads are 175 SMK. Shoot 1000 yd. F-class and subs.

save your money untl you shoot yourfactoey bar ot. You can handload subsonics with your factory barrel

+1. as mine is 1/11, 24", and 170 lapua fmj is very good to 1000 y (subsonic at 1200 mt! )

I shoot subsonics out of my .308, my load is 10.5 gr of Clays under a 220 gr hornaday roundnose. it shoots fantastic out of my 24 in 10 twist barrel, I could hit a deer as far as 300yds with it, but I wont. it has great killing power at closer ranges so that might be what your looking for.

The same gun shoots sub Moa all the way out to the 1k line with 175smk's and 44 gr of RL-15.

You can pretty much make any round subsonic with the right bullet/powder combo. Trailboss works great for subsonic loads as well as other powders. I make up subsonic loads for just about every rifle I have just for fun.

what gun, brass and primer are you using with that sub load? i was experimenting with trailboss in my 26" sps 1-12 but havent had real good results yet but only tried 200g bullets

Make sure you use flat based bullets for accuracy - they will shoot better at subsonic velocities than BTHP's......

My 10-twist 308 Savage shoots 175 SMKs much better than any flat base, RN bullet I have tried. 180 Hornady RN came close, but were about 4" low at 100 yards, everything being the same.

The SMKs were consistently at or under 1 MOA, while the RN's were about 1.5+ MOA.

I tested Trailboss, VV N310, N320, Red Dot, Clays, Lil Gun, and Titegroup. I obtained the best results with Trailboss and VV N310.

The same rifle will shoot 3/8 MOA with 175 SMKs or 180 Nosler Accubonds. It has a McGowen barrel, in case you are wondering.

I use rem brass, cci mag rifle primers, and the 220rn hornady. I used the trailboss before with 150's and had great results, but I wanted a bigger bullet, I splurged on the 220's and found that I couldn't get enough trailboss in the case to get up to speed(I was shooting for about
1050) so I figured I'd try clays(since it is also listed as a subsonic load on Hodgdons website) started with about 8 grains and worked up to the 10.5 and right about 1040-1050 fps. I shoot them out of a factory savage 10 with a 24" 10 twist barrel and a YHM can, makes for a very quiet and powerful combination. Killed a few small animals (rock chucks ect.) with it, and was amazed at the results, they flinched at the hit, but just stood there bleeding to death until they collapsed.

The Lapua purpose built SS bullet is a rebated BT. Shoots great in factory loads and in my handloads.
